Sorry to sound like an irgnoramus - but how on earth do you turn it off, I'm sure I've done it before so it's probably staring me in the face

The reason I ask, is it can be quite off putting in posting in longer threads, as my inbox rapidly fills up to inform me of new replys = no work gets done as Im checking on them
