The 'Green Dot/Red Dot' Debate - what's all about?

Well a few people have asked if the rep system can be removed and obviously some people seem to take it to heart when they get negative rep (I've noticed a few comments from a few people complaining about anonymous negative rep) so heres an idea.

Why not just ignore it?

No one is bleeding, no one has died.... does it really matter?

Just ask yourself one question. "Will it make any difference in 1 years time?".

If the answer is NO, then why bother getting worked up about it.

Christ if I worried about negative comments I would not have met up with DougP more than once

Daz

P.S If it really annoys you that much, then give DougP anonymous positive rep... It really pisses him off

You're going to end up on the ignore list with comments like that.

I'm not sure that it the red dot itself that bothers anyone, but that you don't know who dunnit or for what. My own red dot was anonymous but explained. I think the opportunity to rebut those who disagree is part of the point of the system. The positive points seem great though. Why don't we scrap the red points?

And meet up for a group hug. We wouldn't want anyone to get upset now, would we.

Not sure about the group hug, we're supposed to be Yorkshire divers here! Not really concerned about upsetting people, but I think it's more a case of keeping everything on the boards for all to see. If the occasional flame war kicks off it keeps the place more interesting. It would certainly be more upfront to fess up when giving red rep points out. Surely we are all big enough and tough enough to do this man on man as it were (from the comfort of our email accounts). And if anyone has a problem with that my big brother....

I think what seems to wind some people up is the anonymous nature of the rep system. Also, when people just leave bad rep and don't give a reason. Getting a green blob is ok, it's like someone nodding appreciatively during conversation, they don't say anything but you know they approve, but leaving a red blob and not explaining why, will, to some people, seem like someone is just saying "You're wrong" or "You're stupid" but without making any attempt at explaining why they think that way.
It's just natural that we all want to get good rep points, I like good rep points and if I got a bad one (I haven't yet and please don't think of this as me asking for any!!) then I'd prefer to know why. Not leaving your name or a reason is just like shouting "You're shit" and running away.

I guess it depends also on what posts actually get red blobs, post something contentious and you'll probably expect red blobs, but, from reading some of the responses to the rep system, it seems some people are getting bad rep on completely innocuous posts that shouldn't cause offence. There is also the possibility, dare I suggest it, that some people could possibly abuse the system, giving bad rep to certain people purely because they know it will elicit a reaction. Nasty though it is, some people do like to behave that way seeing people get wound up - just look at how many times people rise to the bait of trolls on Dnet, although, I think the admins should be able to see who has left what rep, so hopefully anything like that could be stamped out pretty quickly.

However, I do think you're right that in the scheme of things it really shouldn't matter that much. For myself, if someone decides to leave me bad rep then as long as they leave a username and a reason as to why they disagree/disapprove then that's fine, if they want then a conversation can be carried out off-board so that we can discuss our differing views without turning YD into a bun fight. If someone decides to leave a red blob without leaving their name or a reason then I'll just assume that it was a mistake and they meant to hit the green blob instead

Dave
