l'd assembled the inspo thursday night, calibrated it and got a low battery warning, so l replaced the battery whilst leaving the head connected to the hoses. This made it a bit awkward to assemble the head to the scrubber canister. l now realise that l should have taken the hole lot off instead of trying to take a short cut.
Wot a kn*b.

l don't feel as bad about the dive being cancelled now.
Surely you would have picked this up when it wouldnt hold a positive right????

Nope, The o-ring and the spacer serve no other purpose than to force the exhaled gas though the lime bed and not up the least path of resitance (I.E the side of the scrubber)

Nothing to do what so ever with use of sealing an air space for the unit to hold a poss or neg test.

Gareth

P.S glad you found it before you dived it Howard, I had to rescue a lad in the redsea this year after he had no spacer or o-ring in his unit when he dived it. (he pre-breathed the unit with no ill effects, about 10mins into the dive is when he had a real problem) I can tell you it was not a pretty site and i am sure it is a mistake he will never repeat in his life.

If this happens again - can I have the tarmaccing business and the caravan?

Typical of the Dude to post this in the hope that someone else won't make the same mistake. No ego? No kidding.

We'll have great dive on the 30th for sure. Top man

Nice one Dude. Glad you caught this one before it bit you, or I'd have no-one to slag off on here.

So nice of you to remind me of another of my fcuk ups.

OK, so in Scapa last year l'm to dive with Adrian and l'm a little rushed in sorting out the Lurve box and it wouldn't hold a neg test that well, l though well if it lets in a little water it'll collect in the moisture trap, yeah right, now l know better.

So we get to 35 mtrs and l start to find it hard to breath and start to breath heavier. Immediately l think CO2 breakthrough and get my bailout reg ready, signal Aidrian and we ascend l get to about 20 mtrs and realise that maybe its not a breakthrough and l should carry on, that thought lasted about a nano second, now l'm on a rb, if l have the slightest doubt l abort. Back on the boat l find that the bottom inch of lime is solid where l'd had a leak into the canister.
Again what a knob and although it should be obvious l won't dive unless the inspo passes all the tests.

l would love to have be able to read Adrians mind when he saw me signal to ascend with my bailout reg in my hand.

Well done Dude, for both events.

Had a similar experience diving the Aristos (50m+) a year ago, unit did pass pos/neg tests. Breathing felt odd at depth, but I pressed on Coming up the shot after 30mins, it was getting harder & harder to breath, eventually bailed onto 50%. Afterwards found I had several inches of salt water in the cannister & lime sodden 2/3 thirds of the way up the stack. Had gone solid like concrete. Exhaust hose connection onto pipe on side of canister loose, never checked it as I never undid that hose. Had worked loose over a years diving, I do check it now!

I had calibration failure on Steve's boat last week & had to swap a cell; wanted to get it done quick, before boat left harbor as a bit rough at sea. It's moments like this when it would be so easy to overlook checking the o-ring as you quickly reassemble the unit.
