Just noticed, there are 3 pages of threads here. Well done everyone for their honesty and forthcomingness (is that a made up word?)

I was totally stressed out yet strangely calm and controlled at the same time. This dive also went down under the category 'dives I learnt from'. Hxxx

I have a full size back up SMB with a mini c02 canister on it. It has 10cm of string on the end terminating in a small suicide clip. In the event of having to go to a back up SMB your in a heightened stress situation. So I keep it realy simple. Clip on back up SMB to loop in end of spool line or to canvus loop on failed primary gas blob and pull the rip chord. Job done, and it can be done whilst ascending or on the 21m stop. Other advantages are if i need additional lift to winch my arse off the sea bed I can clip it to the smb line where it will run freely to the surface giving me the lift of two SMBS (Three if i send the yellow up as well) I have had to do this once when a leaking neck 0 ring emptied out my primary gas bottle. Only thing was i got a few tugs on the line when Steve on Nauticat tried to retreave the deflated SMB laying on the surface not realising it was attached to the inflated SMB ATB Mark Chase

can you put air in them dsmb's manually |
| ||||
| My ones you can. They are unsealed at the bottom and allow you to fill them manually. My new crack bottle SMB is able to be filled manually as well. I think my other one was a sealed unit though. It didn't matter anyway as I had to cut it free and lost it.
