I don't think so the pressure is too great to make this viable besides you have to concentrate on more important stuff easier to offer Octopus and shut down freeflowing gas. With hindsight i could maybe have tried turning it back on to see if it resolved but as the hose was stuck open i.e. jammed i don't think it would have worked in anycase.
It depleted my buddies cylinder from 110 bar to next to nothing very very quickly i estimate it took me less than 30 seconds to shut it down

I don't think PADI rules one way or the other. The instructor guide indicates that students must have a back up reg (occy or pony, short or long is not explicit) and the student must be trained and demonstrate proficiency in the system. (I paraphrased that last bit - there is a lot more detail on what this means and how it is demonstrated)

This comes up a lot in the PADI system - confusion over peoples' experiences and opinions and what it actually says in the instructors' manual. I have not actually checked my manual on this particualr point so I hope I am not adding to the confusion!

One thing that occured after my earlier post. How's your buddy? I imagine he/she must have had quite a fright. Hopefully not to the extent that's going to make them unduly nervous of the water next time?

Fine thanks for asking. Was put on O2 and complained of headache had suffered water ingestion but felt better after about 30mins and several pints of water/squash

Have just read this thread, so am a bit late.

First of all, well done in acting calmly under stressful conditions.

My contribution is this:
When a low-pressure hose freeflows it does so at a rate of 105bar/minute.

I know because I had two go because of a design fault (rem. Schrader valve by ND?)
Anyhow, I timed the flow BOTH times.

Your buddy had about 60secs of air left (at the stated 110bar) when this incident happened.
If (when) next it happens, nice to know that rate.

Stay wet,

Seadeuce

A couple of years ago an experienced diver drowned due to the dry suit hose coming off with the brass cup out of position. At 30 metres this drained the tank in no time at all, and with his buddy right with him. I have seen the same style of hose fitting freeflow on the surface and whip around a divers head on more than one occasion. That is why I use the Seatec or BCD style fitting.
Who needs that amount of flow into a dry suit.

Daz, well done firstly for dealing successfully with the incident, and secondly for using it as a learning experience.

I put mine in a clip next to my SPG.

Not wanting to start agency bashing but this seems to be very much a PADI/BSAC difference.
I'm PADI trained, and I was taught using an octopus on the left, a system I still use. I do the hand clasp thing, although holding the BC shoulder strap is ok as well - the important thing is to maintain contact with each other.

My octopus comes from the left. Slightly longer hose than the primary.

I teach the clasp, or Roman Handshake. Other instructors I know teach students to grip the BCD straps. My reasoning behind this is that you would be hard pressed to pull an arm off, but BCD straps can come undone relatively easily.

PADI don't actually specify exact ways of doing any skills. All the performance requirments say is what needs to be done to meet the standard, but not how to do it. Basically, because there is more than one way to skin a cat. It may cause confusion, but something we always encourage is talking to strange (unfamiliar rather than weird ) buddies before they go diving together.

AFAIUI, the way most schools configure their kit is down to the way the LP ports are on low end first stages. I don't fully understand the technical aspect, but that is the explanation I was given. The consequence of that is that this is what a lot of people will copy when they buy their own regs.

One thing that all students are taught is to ensure that their octopus hoses are easily released and not caught up in any other part of the equipment.
