Vobster, the pot and ME!

Well, I’ve decided to write up the concluding part to my Vobster rapid ascent story to draw a conclusion in my own mind of the whole event!

Firstly though, I’d like to thank you lot for all your support and words of wisdom. I received loads of really helpful, yet sensitive, PMs as well as all the comments on the thread. They were really food for thought.

Unfortunately, 4 days after it happened I started to get tingling in my hands. I called my buddy who suggested contacting LDC for their advice. They “summoned” me, so the following morning; off I trotted to London on the train. 6 hours later, after a stint in the pot, I came home, with another session booked up there for the next day. 2 hours later I was in with the Doc signing my release papers! Because this was my second bend in 6 months for fairly non-provocative diving he mentioned the initials that had already been aimed at me by other divers – PFO! He said it needed to be checked out before I dived again, and wrote me a letter to give to my GP (no private health cover here, I’m afraid). My GP has written asking that it be investigated. And if my authority won’t help she’s going to ask the neighbouring authorities to assist!!!

That means NO diving until it’s sorted! However, after the obligatory 4 weeks no diving after being in the pot, he’s said I can dive in the swimming pool. I’m seeing this as a positive. When you qualify for OW you have to be able to show the necessary emergency skills. I’ve not done any of these for real since qualifying. So I’m going to learn to do them again, and again, and again until they are as much a part of my diving as kitting up. That way, if I come unstuck again I’ll know I have the skills and ability to be able to rectify a lot of things that may happen. It’s about confidence building and that’s what I’m going to work on. I’m also going to get my nitrox qualification which should also help!!!!!

Onwards and upwards! Swimming pool, here I come!

Once again, thanks for you help. It’s been brilliant! I certainly have learnt about diving from this!

Well, they reckon life begins at 40……………………..

Sorry to hear that, but really impressed with the positive attitude. Hope it all goes well for you.

I never saw the original thread, just read it. I'd make the comments as the others and hope you can get it all back together again. Hope the PFO stuff goes ok too.

Matt

Sorry to hear of the aftermath of the Vobster ascent Julie

Still, at least you'll get the PFO issue checked out (hopefully nothing will show), and can get back to diving soon.

The plan about skills in the pool sounds like a good way to spend the time until you can get back in the water 'proper'

You have a great positive attitude in spite of everything (that deserves a green! - a virtual one anyway...I need to spread myself around a bit apparently...).

Julie, I think your attitude to this is brilliant! Use the time to practice skills you haven't used for a while and once all is sorted you'll be so much the better for it!

One tip if I may; use the pool time to practice buoyancy control. Garf posted a response to a question of mine on DIR-X advising holding stops in 3m and I shall certainly be using pool time to further practice and refine this one!

Keep us posted

I didn't see the original thread either but I hope you are OK Julie! Perhaps Swanage Pier would be equivalent of a swimming pool in depth? Maybe in a few weeks.......
