Why? My guess is that he would have got exactly what he'd paid for

Absolutely. I just did my first dives in dark, v.low viz since my incident Silted up in a wreck at 30m and found that I was a different diver altogether. Plan now if viz is crap at the bottom is to always line off the shot. We did a small penetration using wreck reels and all went well. I also thumbed a dive where it was pitch black, with <1m viz as you literally could not see a thing. I thought whats the point we are down here to see stuff and I cant see fook all. Before the incident I would have pushed through it not wanting to thumb it. I suppose the difference between bravery and stupity is hindsight.

Update 28MAY08 - Done a couple of dives since this now. All at Wrasybury. On the last couple I noticed that I had a leak where the hose attaches to my bungied 2nd stage... This is tucked quite high under my chin and so wouldn't have really been noticable with the stream of exhaled bubbles. I had it checked out last week and it turns out that the O-ring had been deformed (in a way that the servicing guy had never seen before) and had created a little loop in the O-ring that let gas past it... I checked it out today at Wraybury... No bubbling to be heard and after dive calcs showed a drop of SAC from 30-32 on the last few dives.... to 19 on this one.

I'm glad to have identified the cause of the excessive, unexpected consumption. Obviously it wouldn't have been a factor if checking gauges regularly enough though.

Another lesson learnt is to check gear out with a shallow easy dive before doing anything more challenging if not used for a while.

Si

Glad you've found a reason for the high SAC, when I first started diving I was a gas chuffin' ho and an old salt told me to focus on my breathing with a slow inhale-pause-and an even longer exhale, my consumption improved instantly.

Good luck with the continued recovery of your 'stick'

Safe diving,
Steve

P.S. to whom it may concern, I'm not advocating skip breathing, the longer exhale is the key, and a double whammy of calming cleansing breaths and effective [in my case] removal of co2 is the result.

Smile scary scenario comes true

Thanks for the honesty in posting this. Most divers have too much bravado to post something this honest.

I have always said - we practise our out of air, rescue and air share routines glibly in relaxed surroundings - None of us really know how we would react in such a situation - you give me hope and inspiration that if it ever happens to me, there is a chance that some of the training will kick in and I will survive.

I think you did ok. This just reminds us all that shit can happen and does. It is always a possiblity when we dive. But it can't stop us diving.

You explain completely the errors with the benefit of hindsight - as we all do with errors we make and learn from. I quote Nietzsche - 'That which doesn't kill me makes me stronger'.
If it was me I would somehow try to draw a line under this and move on. Chalk it up to experience. Get stronger, enjoy your diving. Get back in the water.

Hope you don't mind a stranger writing something so personal, but I found your account very compelling and I hope what I have written helps you.

All the best - Mike -

ditch the 12s.

Si.

Get a set of twin 15s. Lovely in the water perfect for 40-60m. sell your 12s to the captain. Use a single for the 30m stuff..!

Cheers Rob,

I used to have Indie 15s... They were fine to use (in fact I've not had any difficulties with 10's, 12's or 15's - Manifolded or indies... All been fine to trim.)

Trouble with one of team on 15's is that you still have to gas plan for the 12's anyway so there's no benefit in terms of bottom times.

Thanks dude!

Si
