My stepdad learned to dive in the mid 1970s. He was in the RAF and based in Cyprus, was walking along the beach one day, saw a bloke in scuba gear and asked to have a go. That was it - no training, no nothing.

He was hooked, made his own wetsuit, then he and some mates loaded their kit into a landrover and went on an expedition to Sharm, which then consisted of a few wooden huts and a pier. They hired a fishing boat and went diving.

They were some of the first people to dive in the Red Sea. I bet he wouldn't recognise it (or be terribly impressed by it) now.

Hi.

Very nostalgic and good memories for a few old farts like me.

The good old days you can keep them, I much prefer my YBOD diving and being reasonably dry and warm .

Is it me or the bloke on the right has a cylinder with the same markings as a new 'modern' cylinder? (Yellow with black & white stripes on top).

Nothing new under the sun, the black and white quarters have been 'standard' for breathing air for many years, it's only recently that some manufacturers have been more compliant.

Early computers

Anyone else remember diving with MkII Decobrains*, MkI Aladins or, horror or horrors, an Orca SkinnyDipper (the first computer I owned)

*Most were MkIIs that used an algorithm to calculate multi-level diving, MkIs simply worked out the table on max depth/bottom time for you.
