    Inspo Backmounted Lungs

There seems to be a fashion now for the new rebreathers coming to the market having back mounted lungs, and ISC are now offering them as an upgrade to the Meg. Possibly AP will get on the bandwagon, but I've heard about people who've used back mounted the lungs on an inspo but haven't actualy seen any. Possibly it's as easy as cutting off the lungs and turning them around.
Has anyone got any photos of such a mod.

Paul Channing made a kit that allowed you to use existing lungs to do this.

Try a Google for Channing Back Mount Counterlungs, should turn up some results.

That said, he's not selling them any more as far as I know, but you could probably get someone to make something very similar.

Found it: Paul C's Inspiration BMCLs - Rebreather World

    Digs.

I have them on the Sentinel and when you're nice and horizontal you can feel the suck-down effect but you just learn that horizontal isn't ideal and trim it out by nose-upping a bit.

Well... I learnt that on the IDA and the Sentinel works pretty much the same way. They both put the single lung close to the back of your neck. I was more surprised how little difference only having one counterlung made.

I doubt AP will change. I think their system is ideal but we get other differences, I'm not sure they're advantages, by settling for less than ideal.

I brought one of Paul Channings kits but sold it on because the set up moves the unit away from your back. I never dived it, just didn’t like it. It gave me a few ideas though. I have had a Vision set up back mounted for 3 years. Its not simple to do if you want the thing to function properly but with a bit of effort its possible.

    Briefly

I have a KT frame wit twin 7s, it fixes to the unit via a Diverite backplate and twin bladder recwing. I removed the lungs from the yoke earlier to make them easier remove for cleaning. They fix with fastex and D rings so just reverse and clip them off behind the cylinders which also provide protection from sharp objects ect. I don’t use an ADV so no issues there its simple to reverse the T’s. A fair amount of work on hoses for the Narked @ 90 manual inflators for Dil and O2 which I take over the shoulders through a bungee loop on each side to hang chest high for easy reach. I made up a pull toggle using standard hose with nylon line running through it for the CL dump valve. It follows the same route as the O2 inflator and falls perfectly to hand when required. That’s it.

It functions exactly as with the lungs on the front except of course you don’t have the clutter so stages ect are more easily managed. (others don’t have this problem, I did) It makes trim easier putting buoyancy where the wing / dry suit would. WOB? if there is a difference I cant tell.

Not selling, advocating or making any claims. People make there own decisions and live with the consequences. It works for me.

hey up kieth i had a back mounting kit for my inspo worked ok and that nice bit of kit didnt really notice any difference apart from an uncluttered feeling, certainly didnt seem to affect performance but with my guru like trim and control i arent suprised

i would think long and hard as some do take some butchery of the lungs its worth getting a cheap set to mess about with rather than messing up a good set

Blanaid (Divegyrl) has a Channing kit for sale.

Used once, but then returned to standard for a course and never got round to refitting it.

the only problem with the channing one is the o2 add becomes a birt of a pisser on a long dive better if you can rig an alternative like a kiss manual add makes life much easier

Paul made a very good kit & although I never owned one I had a good look & decided I did not like it at all . I approached Dave Thompson who allowed me some pictures to make a copy of his bmcl's which was the fore runner to the JJ-CCR bmcl although the JJs are bigger due to trying to conform to CE regs .
I used mine with the APD Remote O2 or Diluent from narked at 90, 1 on each side for the dil & O2 . basically I dove it for 3 years & loved it .
I sold mine with the unit & I believe it has been sold on again .
    Colin

I trust my rebreather completely ,
I just don't trust the user

    onwards & downwards

You dont butcher the lungs just unpick the stitches fastening to the yoke. Makes cleaning a 100% easier even if you keep them on the front. If you find its not for you get them sewn back, will cost about a fiver. I doubt you will find a a spare set for less than that.
