Protecting Inspiration scrubber..

I'm taking my new YBOD out to the Red Sea and was looking at how I will be packaging it all up in the crate to ship it. One area of concern is the scrubber cartridge and the central threaded spindle - when the canister is not filled with lime, this piece feels quite delicate, and would completely snooker me if it snapped during transit.

Was thinking about padding out the void with clothes to reduce any liklihood of this getting damaged.

Anyone tried this, ir do you think I'm being over cautious?

I leave my unit empty fully assembled with the cover on packed in the original box. I lay some clothing in the bottom of the box to give some padding.

Ive flown it all over the place and never had any issues to date (touch wood that will continue)

I always carry the entire scrubber assembly as carry on !!!! Maybe a bit over kill but those electronics sure do cost a wee bit. And it creates a great space to pack other things in, like regs, dry suit etc ...

Totally over the top. The problems shipping Inspirations round the world is not what breaks on them but what they break. Suspect areas are the switches on the handsets (they don't like being banged so the handsets travel in my drysuit booties) and the catches on the case.

Well the other thing that gets broken is you bank account on excess baggage. How come BA want £139 return for 70 kilos of me to Finland but £360 each way for 44 kilos of excess?

Beware if fitting 3L tanks without the nice 'inline' valves on them. My case was never the same again after a course in the Canaries on hired tanks.

Oh the thing on the scrubber that does break is the glue round the top. Don't drop a fully loaded scrubber into the canister and let the top catch on the edge - lower it in gently.

interesting, I always assumed that would be troublesome with security.

Have you ever had any problems carrying it on?

I was planning on taking the head and handsets in my hand luggage - as these are the expensive and life supporting part!

In order to also try and get a reasonable luggage weight I'm hiring inspiration cylinders on the boat (MV Excel) and getting Sofnolime out there (expensive, but probably cheaper, and more convenient than shipping it myself).

Was also thinking of taking off the 1st stages and the manual injectors, as these are quite heavy, and putting them in my pockets (because they're pocket sized, and there seems to be no weight limit in pocketed allowance!)

I'm still planning on using the "It's a big box that'll not fit on your conveyor, so I'll just take it to oversized baggage for you" and hope that they don't weigh it!

Not with the scrubber. "I'm a diver and this is part of my kit" with further explanation works well. Amazing how many people have done a PADI dive course/want to do one/didn't realise that astraunauts use rebreathers ...

Did have an issue in Charles De Gaulle Airport last year when the x-ray machine made part of my filling whip look like a gun, however ....

You think that'sa bad, try getting from Turkey to Greek Cyprus with a knife in your bags, all of which were hand luggage as I was on a boat. Customs did not like that one. If I'd have known, I'd have just left the knife behid and bought another one at the other end...
