Training Before getting a unit

I am seriously thinking of switching to a rebreather this year, but just at the moment the finances are not quite ready to splash out on a unit.

I do have some leave due to me soon and had thought of trying to fit in a training course for a rebreather then. My concern is that I probably wont be in a position to place an order for a unit (unless I win the lottery!) till at the earliest mid summer, then there would be the delivery time for the unit.

I had heard rumors that there are time limits on how long the cert would remain valid assuming I had no further rebreather diving for 6 - 8 months. Can any one confirm this?

Cheers all.

Darren

Hi Darren,

If you were not diving the unit straight after the course you would need to do a refresher, this makes sense from a safety point of view if nothing else. Your initial certifying instructor should do this at limited cost (ie free)

Have you thought about not wasting your leave on a course, but just doing the course over a couple of weekends once you are in a position to buy?

Cheers

Dave Cooper

My job is very unpredictable, as I work on a call out basis. I cant guarentee having several weekends in a row free. Also the leave is a "take it or lose it" thing.

What sort of time gap would you consider acepatable between completeing the course and starting to use a unit, or should there ideally be no gap?

Hi Darren,

TDI standards state a period of inactivity of 3 months requires a refresher course.

I am fairly flexible with weekend commitments so could cope with last minute cancellations. Unfortunately all my week courses are now taken.

Have you thought about a try-dive on the new Evolution? I am hoping to set up a weekend at NDC in Jan or Feb (once the bloody thing has been delivered).

Cheers

Dave

Looks like I will have to find something else to do on my time off.

A try dive might be a good idea. Any CCR costs alot of money and a decent trydive could help stop spending that cash on the wrong unit. I had been thinking of a KISS unit, most probably a KISS sport. But with the introduction of the Evolution there may be a few more Inspirations coming onto the market.

Depending on the date I would be interested in having a dive if you manage to get something sorted.

Cheers

Darren

You may find that doing the course may bump the CCR up your list of life's priorities

I had 4 months between the course and getting my unit. That seemed like an eternity.

if you do not mind second hand units you might save yourself a few bob if you do the course and get your ticket, there are always second hand units for sale on the inspiration list, if you are serious and you do want one I am sure there are a few of us in the YD forum that can act on your behalf and introduce you to a potential seller on the inspiration list, just get you tricket!
