| nigel i agree fully and as for alpinist, i can see the advantages, however the argument that how many times do you need to bail out is all well and good except fpor the one time you need to bail out, then all the trouble free dives in the world aint going to save your ass when you need the gas and you aint got it!

| Conclusion? It seems; A BOB is the more practical style It needs to be streamlined and no larger than a stage It needs to be full CCR It needs an ADV It needs an autodump or some method of making the ascent "hands-off" It needs to allow instant OC bailout (via the ADV) until the diver is ready to fly it CCR It needs to be "sealed" - in other words it needs to remain clean, sterile and dry long term until/if it is needed It needs minimal/no setting up pre- and post-dive It needs to cope at least with prolonged deco (up to 2 hrs?) It needs PO2 monitoring It should be at the correct mix always, for instant use It should be robust enough to treat like a stage It should be cheap Have I missed anything? Having acquired a YBOD so I will always have enough gas, it seems daft for me not to think the same way about bailout. And as far as extra hassle is concerned, I don't find the YBOD is that complicated, so why should a BOB be overwhelming? Filling a stage with the correct mix would take as much time. |

| Ere John - it's just occurred to me..... When you say BOB, are you using it as a generic term for a 2nd rebreather to bail to? BOB, to me, means the one that Gordon Smith was mucking about with a few years ago - it got an article in 9-90 IIRC & then nothing more was heard. Very neat idea, I thought. |
