Question Inspiration handset magnets

My Instructor took his handsets apart today to clean the crud off the switch magnets and it seems to be a poor bit of design to me. Does anyone put anything on these magnets to prevent them from rusting up so badly?

Ian

Some use nail varnish but mine would rust away whatever I did. Had AP send me a new set every 6 months - regular as clockwork - free of course.

Why they dont fix the problem in the first place Ill never know.

I occasionally take the handset covers off and put a smear of silicone grease on the magnets to slow down any corrosion. There has been stuff on the Inspiration list about this, some people use grease, some use clear nail varnish, but at the end of the day, an exposed magnet in a sea water environment will develop corrosion.

I would have thought that magnets captivated in the plastic sliders, a bit like the VR3 buttons, would be a more corrosion resistant solution - but AP have addressed this with the Vision electronics, by making the buttons a completely different design on the new handset.

I'm not on the Inspiration list yet, due to my unit having to take an unusual route to get to me. It is currently on its way to Germany for the 2nd time in a few weeks and it will arrive here at the end of February, hopefully. I finally gave up waiting and am doing the course on a borrowed unit.

Hi Ian,

As soon as your course is done, email sarah@apdiving.com

and she will put you on the list.

I have put varnish on my magnets and had no real problems. AP say these are second generation magnets and shouldn't rust like the old ones.

In any case after a days diving I soak the handsets in fresh water and work all the switches to get the water behind them.

HTH and good luck with your course, welcome to the dark side.

Cheers

Dave Cooper

They have! See the new you-know-what handset. Pietzo switches! By the way do you know any Inspiration divers who strap their compasses to their (magnetic switch) handsets?

checked my magnets today and they are fine, they have been in for ages and are showing little or no sign of corrosion, is this on units of a certain age, because friends of mine have had to replace theirs far quicker than i have had to swap mine, these are still the original set!

Thanks for the tips/feedback all, hopefully my unit will have the newer magnets.

Slide magnets

There has been a technical issue over the magnets.

I recently sold my five and half year old inspiration. It has never had any issue with the sliders, I annually greased the sliding face and never needed to anything more.

I subsequently bought a 18 month year unit, mid 2004 and from the moment go I had problems with the sliders. On inspection half the magnetic disc had crumbled away.

AP said they were having problems with them and free issued a new set, from a different supplier at the Dive Show.

If you are having problems give Nicky or Sarah a ring at AP.
