Hello,

A friend of mine bought batteries for his YBOD but here they cost Gbp7 each and the bad thing is I cannot order from the website you gave me as it does not cover Malta I think who comes here will have to pay lime by batteries from me!

Rechargable batteries

Hello all,

Hope that I am not going to ask something really stupid and get flamed! Has anyone here tried good rechargable batteries for the YBOD.( if they even exict in size.) I never heard about this topic before and got me thinking that why people does not use a rechargable battery in the main and use a normal one in the slave! If you have problems with primary rechargable then you would have the slave as 'bailout' !

What are your views?

Piere,

Please note that the info below is to the best of my understanding, and you should not assume it is correct, or base any decision upon it.

I'm not sure if they are suitable for use in the YBOD. But I can tell you that

1)rechargeable batteries of the same physical format tend to have a lower voltage than the equivalent Alkaline battery.

2) rechargeable Ni-Cad's and Ni-Mh batteries discharge slowly when not in use.

3)Rechargeable batteries tend to have different discharge characteristics than Alkaline batteries. The voltage of an alkaline battery decays quite evenly accross its life, whereas Ni-Cad and Ni-Mh batteries tend to output a steady voltage accross their life and then the voltage decays very rapidly at the end of the life.

I suspect that unless the system was explicitly designed to account for this, using rechargeable batteries in a life support system would make any sort of low battery indication cut in way to late to be of any value.

Hi Pierre,

IMHO, if it's a question of cost then look at www.7dayshop.com . Batteries at £1.79 a go. Don't know about shipping to Malta, but maybe if anyone is going out there they could bring some over for you.

Hope this helps,

Nick

battery bounce

you do get the odd one that goes a bit mad .
one of the favourites is they power up giving the start up "beep" then die and then the same again over and over.
i've always thought the position of battery box in the scrubber and its design is very poor on the inspiration .
it must be the most common fault on them.
ya get the old battery bounce/weak springs producing a black spot due to arcing on the battery terminal and then they just play up.
i've resorted to a shaped packing piece between the battey and the lid that clamps them firm on the contacts which cured this problem.
cheap as chips so i change e'm regular

I found the best thing for black spots is one of those papermate retractable pencils (the orange ones with the little black rubber) the rubber on the end is perfect for cleaning the contacts.

Yes that's what is going to happen and at the end safety first so I will still use the proper batteries! But was curious!
