Medical for DM & IDC

This has probably been done to death but i'm fooked if i can find a definitive answer!

The other half and i are going abroad to do our DM and IDC, we've been told that we need medicals for this, my girlfriend got in touch with her GP who quoted £35 and mine said that i needed 'forms' for the doctor to fill in and quoted me £72 for the priviledge.

So:
-What medical do we need (does it have a specific name)?
-What are these 'forms'?
-Will any medical cover us only for the course or will it be ok for instructing purposes? (i realise that instructing in the UK may require an HSE medical)
-What are next weeks winning lotto numbers going to be? (saturday of course!)

Any help or advise would be gratefully accepted (especially on the last question!)

Cheers

Ian

Ian,
All you need is the standard PADI medical form. Take it to your doctor and get him/her to sign it. This costs about 35UKP. If you need one let me know and I can email one over to you.

depending on where you're going you may be able to get a local doctor to do the medical a lot cheaper. When I did my DM's my doc over here wanted about £60, got it done over in the Philippines for about a fiver.

Just the medical that you'd normally see on the standard self-certification form. If you need an pdf version you can print out, pm me and I'll send one.

Really depends on where you're doing the instructing - if its in the UK, then you *WILL* require an HSE medical. If you're definitely planning on instructing it might be worthwhile getting the HSE sorted beforehand to make sure you're not going to find any nasty surprises that would make it impossible to instruct - and get the doc to sign the PADI medical at the same time!

Ian,

You might as well go with an HSE medical, at least that way you'll know how fit for diving you are prior to forking out for your IDC/IE.

For your FIRST HSE medical expect to pay about £80 + £60 in blood tests. After your first one you dont need the blood test.

PS. the HSE medical is FAR in excess of the padi paperwork.

Is there a list of people that do the HSE Medical. Or does your GP do it?

Is the Self Certification form the only thing required by PADI?

Thanks

Gary

When I was doing it (a few years ago so might have changed) there wasn't a self-certification option for divemaster or above, it had to be signed by a GP.

The 30-odd quid seemed a bit steep so I, er, just filled it in and signed it myself in my best illegible (or is that inelligible) doctor's handwriting and stamped it with one of those DIY rubber stamp kits you get in stationers with the local healthcentre's address.

Not that I'm condoning it or recommending anyone do such a thing...

I am afraid that is the official list. Unfortunately it is not always quite up to date which may be why you are having trouble.
Most of us do the medicals in addition to our usual jobs and can have difficulty fitting in everyone who wants one.
Keep trying and if you get no joy try the Employment Medical Advisory Service on 0141 275 3029 in case there are any new doctors in your area doing the medicals who are not yet on the list.
Good luck
