I quite like doing the compass one. Mainly 'cos my map reading is ok so it's dead easy to teach even though everybody's compass is different which can be a pain. And walking round the car park at Stoney with a towel on your head is always a laugh.

Rather bizzarely it's the mask clearing one which always seems to give the most trouble- but when the trainees can do it it all suddenly clicks into place and they wonder what they were messing around at.

.
Just use one compass (loose) and pass it round, you have more control over the lesson that way! It also irons out any worries about peoples compasses being on their kit/ not being able to hold them out properly!

Ah yeah its not bad to teach, I just have something against compasses - probably through being made to teach that in every instructor thing i've ever been to! That said, last time I taught it properly (ie within the club) I ended up just passing my compass around for everyone to use - too much stress trying to get club compasses to point in the right direction! :O)

I use my compass threaded though a stainless bolt snap anyway so passing it round will be a doddle. Hooray.

Doancha just hate all these 3 letter TLAs.

What the hell is a BSCA pie and is it edible? I take it the BSAC tie is a mix funny colours, possibly furry to match the beard.

I got my PIE the same day as Woz. I think i got most things sorted with breaking the skills down, but you never know what they can throw at you on the day, or what muppets you got in your group.

As for your TIE Woz, you'll p*ss is. I've seen you teach (signed off all your lectures for the past 8months) and your lecture title is great.

Your not wrong mate when I did my AIE we had a PADI MI who let a student enter the water first on what was meant to be their first boat dive, said student the lost their mask, PADI MI then let student number two decend to depth unknown to retrive said mask.

I'm not so worried about the TIE bit as I have got plenty of practice in and my lecture style is ok and my theory knowledge is pretty up to date.

The PIE will be a challenge but again as long as I take it slow and cover the basics there is not much that can go wrong.

It's only a muppet or 2 I have done the OWIC with in the past where you are having to teach a supposed DL basic skills (like buddy checks) that worry me, especially when they forget suit feeds, attmpt to flip their stab on over their heads and end up crowning themselves painfully, try to put their mask on without a strap and forget their fins. Almost embarrassingly novice like. Then again I suppose it's a chance for you to shine. No- really- there was someone training to be an instructor who did that. I think the instructor trainer recommended that he went back and did some basic diving training again.

In the exam I imagine that the examiner will ask everyone if they have got everything they need and if someone forgets something they will not mark you down unless you do something dangerous about it (i.e against SDPs). If a suit feed is forgotten you can go in without it as they have a stab. If you remember to teach a buddy check, teach putting fins on and teach an entry you will get rid of the possibility of someone doing something stupid like throwing their kit over their head - I imagine they would be seriously taken to task on this one anyway!
