Anyone running a BSAC Nitrox Course, want an assistant?

Just a bit of an "on the offchance" post, is anyone running a BSAC Combined or Advanced Nitrox course anytime soonish (next few months) who could do with a little helper? I'm looking to help out on one so I can get my own Nitrox Instructor thingy so I can run a course back in my own club late this year (no one else in the club is qualified to teach it).

If anyone knows of a course going on that might like a helper, please let me know - ideally in the North East, but anywhere from South Scotland down to southern Midlands would probably be fine.

Cheers

David

Don't know whether our bloke is running one in the coming months, but I will pass this on to him.

I guess you've already checked the PoE. However it might be worth having a chat with your regional coach. We ran a Nitrox course this year jointly with another branch and the region helped out by providing an instructor. So they were aware but it wasn't on the PoE.

I'll probably end up running one in branch in 3 or 4 months time but this will probably be way too late for you.

Well, it is cheap stuff and it comes almost from the local gardening store, but it works fine and it's very solid. We tried to destroy one by hitting it with a hammer... we succeeded but we really had to hit it hard - http://www.stde.ch/en/faq.php

Exactly what Janos and Gavin said!!

We might be running one at some point in the autumn but we space the theory out over several weekdays before doing the practical at a weekend so it would be difficult to take an assistant who is not local to Leeds.

Good luck!

Paul

David,

The other way is if you want to organise a Combined Course for the club, say October time, I might be able to get myself and my DO to come along and teach the course, you can observe ( ie do half the lectures ) / do an assist and get your ticket to teach it.

To those who asked, I haven't observed a course yet (apart from the one I was on, obviously). But from what I can tell, they don't require the "observe" thing before the "assist" thing anymore. From the BSAC website it states the requirements as basically:
  • Done course yourself
  • Be an instructor
  • Serve "actively" as an assistant instructor to gain recommendation

In fact, it even now says that "Sitting at the back as an observer is neither appropriate nor acceptable training for someone who is to be an Approved Instructor."
All from http://www.bsac.org/techserv/sdc/nxi.htm

Sounds like some promising courses people have come up with anyway.

Gavin: I can't get down to the Midlands that weekend, otherwise it would have been perfect.

Janos: never actually occured to me to check the POE... Contacting regional coaches would have been a next step, but I know they don't do anything over summer so hoped a club might be doing it before then (I won't have a car after the end of September, back at Uni).

Gareth: I was trying to get our training officer to get a combined course run, but hes complaining that we don't have enough time to do it and wants to do a basic course (which i'm still working on talking him out of - both for the students doing something more useful, and for me so I can assist!). Certainly still a possibility though, i'll do some more work of talking him into it :O)

Nick: I could make any of those dates you mentioned in August / September, i'll PM you with more details about what i've done / where I am, etc, and see if I can be of use to you

David

I did my assist and got authorised in july with the West Midlands Region. Give Garry and Mandy Asson an email and see if they can help you.

I'm hoping to be teaching on that course so mgiht see you there.
