BSAC DL - Rescue Management Scenarios

I'm due to do my Rescue Management Scenarios in a couple of weeks, but it's been a year since I did the theory. I was planning on attending this year's lectures but missed them as the club brought them forward a week. Anyway, apart from the course notes, does anyone have any recommended reading that will help me with this?

Tricky

The course notes cover most of it, however read the O2 admin notes as well, i incorporate that into the scenarios as well as its very relevant at that level.

If you can get access to a Resussie Annie for some practice that is always helpful, as well as hands on the O2 kit to practice.

BSAC Book Safety and Rescue for Divers is another good read, a bit dated now but still lots of good stuff in it. There is a bit in the Dive Leading Book as well, but not much more than your course notes i'd say.

I'm not sure that Tricky's inflatable doll will be any good for this sort of practice

Lightbulb Prm

The PRM course used to be a "skills circus" with as much emphasis on the skills needed in a rescue situation: O2, getting divers out the water, CPR, etc

However, the current course is all about "management", i.e. taking control and managing the resources you have available to you...

The best advice I can give is:
1. be prepared to get stuck in
2. be prepared to firmly give orders (shout at people to do what you want)
3. delegate
4. watch those tricky instructors - they'll throw a curve ball at you
5. enjoy yourself
6. delegate
7. watch those tricky instructors - they'll throw another curve ball at you
8. enjoy yourself

FWIW, we were teaching a DPM course that (unfortunately) due to a real incident with another group of divers, converted into a PRM, O2, etc

Was really gratifying to see the experience/lessons learned from the various training courses kick in with all the students

Jeremy,

I did the RMS on Sunday so can fill you in on all the details. It's nothign to worry about since it is training and no one really expects trainee DL's to have been in a RM situation.

I have a topical, but possibly inappropriate , joke about inflatable dolls that I will PM to anyone who might be interested

Cheers/Nic

Thanks. Got to spread it around a bit before I can green you though.

Sloppy seconds? No thanks mate

Annie's the only girl for me now. She lights up when I press the right buttons.

No.8 is the best thing to try and do as the rest will come once everyone is having fun! I love running PRM days as they are fun for instructors too. Be prepared to think a bit about the scenario unfolding.

One point I make when I do these sessions is to try and take feedback on board. No one will expect perfection so you need to be open to some constructive critisism.

Have fun, your instructors will!

Paul

I'd say watch out for the instructors, I know a hell of a lot of evil tricks to pull on people in scenerios. However done of my branch know them yet, so they better watch out on our PRM course later this month.

Enjoy yourself.
