BSAC to PADI Crossover?

Can I cross over from BSAC to PADI at the relevant qualification?

I started out as PADI and crossed over to BSAC with a couple of lectures and a couple of open water check out dives etc. I was wondering if the same can be applied in reverse, obviously with some extra lectures to cover anything one agency deems important to know.

I was just looking to the future and the possibility of taking off overseas if the urge gets too much and wouldn’t mind doing something a little more enjoyable than keyboard bashing

It kind of all boils down to should I get my wallet out and pay to go through the Divemaster course or could I go the route of BSAC into instructor etc and cross over to Padi without incurring too many costs. I know it’ll take more time in the BSAC route but I’m not pressed for time at the moment.

All advice greatfully received.

Yes you can, but it costs more than BS-AC to PADI.

There is a cross-over scheme similar to our SALT.

IIRC you can only do the PADI to BSAC crossover once, ie if you cross from padi to bsac, then do more padi quals, you can't get them credited.
Dunno if that's true padi to bsac.

As you are credited a bit should you do the IDC, it may be worth doing to BS-AC bits (as they are free/cheaper) within the club and then crossing over.

Guess how I know ?

I'm afraid I can't help much on the BSAC to PADI bits. I remember seeing something on this and it wasn't particularly handy - I think BSAC AI crossed over to PADI Assistant Instructor or something - you definitely had to do the full IDC, but I could well have got this bit wrong.

However BSAC changed this bit recently:

So that you can SALT multiple times. Option 3 on http://www.bsac.org/techserv/salt3.htm
Which is A Good Thing IMHO.

Hi Janos,
Thanks for that, I was (clearly) unaware.
It'd be nice if there was a general LCD qualification.

NP, as I undersnd it, there is some stuff that you can get 2nd hand, but your PADI training record needs to 'come out of the cellophane' at the beginning of the course.

If you want to follow the instructor route, you need a full medical, plus FA/CPR skills current.

They both accept other agencies qualifications and crossover to 'equivilant' levels. Its not like for like as both seem to require more if you are trained elswhere but thats another discussion.

What you need to know is that you can't crossover to PADI as an instructor from BSAC. You have to do the Instructor Examination. You can cross in the opposite direction with minimal additional training required so that might be the best bet.

hmmmm would that be having to just do the exam or repeating parts of the course and paying for a full course.( BSAC instrutor to PADI instructor)

I'm slanting this towards a cheaper option.

I was 'told' it would cost me around £700 to get divemaster (including rescue diver).Even with club fee's and training costs i can't see it coming to that much with BSAC.

correct me if i'm wrong.

Like you say, not pressed for time so go the BSAC route but whatever happens if you want to do the PADI instructor thing you will have to pass the exam at some point. I have a foot in both camps but would go with PADI if the long term plan is working abroad. I dont know where you got the £700 from, it seems a bit steep.

Do your BSAC AI and then the IDC / IE as the BSAC AI will cont as DM rating.
Before going in for an IDC/IE you need to have a EFR qualification that is not older than 2 years, 100 logged and dives and copies of your qualifications with other agencies what ever they are. You also need an current insurance before you take part in an IDC / IE . If you have any questions on the subject, give me a shout on Skype.
