Making a sport diver out of a Commercial one

I am a PADI MSDT and also work as a Police diver.I work alongside a collegue who wishes to become PADI trained (hols etc).We both have HSE qual`s (the old part 4,50mts on air.)He routinely wears drysuits, goes to 50 mts,has done over 100 dives and passes an annual HSE diving medical. Now, because our equipment differs from that of sports divers he has never worn a bcd, used an open circuit demand valve or a half mask.In addition he`s not done any quizzes, knowledge reviews and thinks an RDP is a rest day payment!
My question-To what level can I train him providing of course all other PADI and HSE requirments are met( ie 02,dm etc)
I imagine I would have to create (legit,of course)a paper trail for him also?

Hi Colin
As you state you are a master scuba diver trainer, then you can train your friend all the way to Divemaster and depending on what your spec quails are will be the guide to what spec quails you can teach. You must remember this because to be an MSDT you must have certified 25 people and have at least 5 spec teaching skills.
Don't forget if you are teaching PADI you need to have personal indemnity insurance, HSE diving medical and to be in teaching status.
Issue the full open water training pack, get him to complete all the forms, then knowledge reviews, quizzes and finial exams and then you must keep the forms for 5 years

Hope this helps
Phil

It looks like you are wanting to 'crossover' the diver without the long laborious OW AOW RD route, PADI international in Bristol should be able to help with advice on what grade to cross over at although if you are concerned about buoyancy etc then it might be wise to do a few lesons with the diver to give them the understanding.

I wouldn't have thought a starting from OW would be neccesary as the diver concerned sems like he would know the theory behind diving reasonably well.

I would suggest you do an advanced open water course with him. Including drysuit and PPB as two of the elective dives. Get him in a pool first with a drysuit and BCD. That should help with his bouyancy. I think that OW is a bit low for him to start.

Hi,

I know this might not be quite what your looking for, but it looks like you can cross over to BSAC as a sports diver.

You would probably need to sort out a bit of familiarity with conventional scuba gear for your mate, but worth a look. I'm not sure if you could do that via BSAC direct via the SALT system and then find a pool and then a quarry and just familiarise yourself with the kit.

Means your mate will be able to do 35 meters and deco, which i suspect he is already doing if he's doing 50 meters on air (or very short run times!).

This means you should be able to get the ticket for abroad. Sports is also a CMAS 2 * if your worried about BSAC quals abroad, but I've never had any issues, they just want your dosh!

http://www.bsac.org/techserv/salt.pdf

Have a look at the link, the pdf sumarises the requirements, I thinks thats you.

Not sure if any BSAC expert can help and confirm that?

Gareth

Gareth
I've only once had a problem with a PADI operation that insisted that all the non-PADI divers who had paid in advance for a 3-day trip did a Scuba assessment at extra cost first. What was that about just wanting your money?

Other than that, no problems diving in over 20 countries with my BSAC quals.

Due to the syllabus contained in the HSE Part 4 or as it is now known HSE Pro Scuba, commercial divers can crossover to either BSAC Sports Diver or Padi Advanced Open Water and then move up from there. If joining BSAC they can also apply for the Search and Recovery and Oxygen Administration SDC.

Hope that
