Doing my TIE

I am sitting the exam in St Albans on 5th Nov.

I am happy with my presentation skills, but need some help on what to read up about. I have my instructor manual and student manual.

Are there any other information sources I should read up.
Any info on the exam questions gratefully received.

Ian

TIE Advice

If your already a DL / ADI (which you must be) then get a copy of all 3 current Dive Leader written tests. Have a go at all three, if you can do those you should have no issues with passing the test. Have a look at the questions you get wrong and revise those area's.

The TIE paper is basically Dive Leader Standard, after the first few questions, I actually started enjoying mine. You will find some of the questions are actually in the PIE exam that are in the DL exam anyway.

Might be worth while having a go at the new Sports Diver tests as well, as it helps with getting a handle on the style of examining / what they are looking for.

Only thing I would add for the presentation part is don't use the slides from the Powerpoint lectures as it looks very poor, one of the guys who did his presentation used a load of the BSAC stuff and looked pretty poor.

I did mine using a flip chart and a chair to hold it up. Use practical probs, I was doing rescue management and looked at the organisation and blew a whistle to wake them up half way through. Would not do it for a work presentation, but its the BSAC way If your going to use powerpoint, use other aids. I got a merit for the presentation, and they liked all that style of stuff.

Cheers,

Gareth.

The cirulatory system

Right then my 10 minute lecture is entitled the Circulatory system..

Should I restrict myself to circulation heart and blood,
or include
mechanics of breathing
lungs and the gas exchange
respiration and effects on air spaces
something else

Any good visual effects I could include?

All ideas welcomed

Ian

Let me start by saying I'm not BSAC trained, but I am SAA trained and regularly teach on regional courses including instructor courses.

If the process is similar, and I assume it is, then you will be assessed on your teaching skill. Micro teaching at that.

A 10 minute lecture, once you have accounted for Aims, objectgives, motivations, checking understanding, summary and perhaps a look forward, probably only leaves you 6 mins, so keep is simple, I'd restrict it.

Agree with Juz, don't try and cover too many areas. Stick to the core subject. Have fun.

I'd agree. Remember, your not trying to teach the people your giving the lecture too about "Circulatory system", they should understand this already.

The instructors are trying to access your ability to delivering a lecture, which is a different thing alltogether.

Essential Criteria

Your examiners will be checking to see if you have met all the essential criteria.

PAVE

Progressive. Delivers the info in small chunks in a logical order.

Accurate. You're not talking b*ll*cks, the information is accurate and up to date.

Visual. All info points are supported by a visual aid

Effective. You've got a structure (intro, main theme, summary) you check for transfer, you involve the class etc.

Hit all the PAVE points and you'll pass.

HTH.

Remember your lesson must contain the 4 essential criteria for a theory lesson; PAVE - Progressive, Accurate and up to date, uses Visual Aids and is Effective. If you have all these elements you should be fine. Everything you need is contained within the IFC course notes - have a read through these again if you haven't already. Think back to what your Instructors talked about and any feedback you got on your IFC.

Good planning and preperation is the key plus rehearse in front of your family, dog, cat, or mirror etc to get the timing right and help with any nerves.

Remember the examiners want you to pass. Best of luck

Dave
