did they really just say that.....

ok, so as we all know there are some exceptional students out there- who are just naturals at it all, then some students need that little bit extra help and there are those who are put in your pool and classroom sessions to test every inch of your teaching abilities and it allways feels worth while helping them, but then there are those people whose say something and you really stop to think- did they ask that?

    examples ive had are.

"will we get wet on this diving lesson in the lagoon?"

"i cant swim can i wear my life jacket?"

"im scared of fish are there any in the sea?"

"i havent brought any swim shorts- can i wear yours?"

and my all time favourite one this week,

"i dont want to use weights- they're heavy"

On a serious note it astounds (spl?) me that someone who cant swim would want to go diving! Really dont understand that.

AT Capers once I witnessed a woman rushing out of the shallow water fully kitted up refusing to go back into the water as she didnt like fish, despite her instructor explaining the fish wont hurt.

I never could understand why she has paid to learn to Scuba dive in that case.

I can answer that one Yaz.

She must want to dive the Mediterranean from Turkey. I can assure you that there are definitely no fish there.

I once taught a guy who had drowned as a child, and his partner had paid for his course as a way of persuading him to over come his fear. He had to learn to swim first, and as soon as he could do the 200m swimtest he came on the course. he was never going to find it easy, and had problems on his first outing in open water, but he worked really hard, and last I heard, he was a DM.

in that case you'd be suprised how many people who do discover scuba diving cant swim.. its not a problem aslong as they just listen well and try hard, they seem to enjoy it! its just obviously the idea of a life jacket goes against the man idea of diving!!lol..

I take it that was a near drowning incident. In all seriousness, my hat is off to him. I have a irrational fear of heights and I'm getting there. Maybe one day I'll be able to overcome that like your student.

My favourite question ever was "Doesn't it cost a lot of money to keep dropping those lead weights at the end of each dive ?", asked during first classroom session.
1st rule of diving. Make sure that the number of ascents equals the number of descents.

Of course. I am talking complete and utter balls, you know?

A set of ankle weights were clipped together to make one long circle of weight.

    Student: What are they?

    Me: Ankle weights.

Student: For people with very big ankles?

My Partner (Queen Scallop) wanted to dive but couldn't swim so I had to teach her first. I'm not sure I used approved methods but she passed her BSAC swimming assesment!

Noel, have some climbing lessons. That worked for me. I hated heights but ended up climbing some serious mountains!

Incidently I had a student ask me if he put his left fin on his right foot and vice versa, whether he would swim backwards.
