Id have no objection to PADI OWSIs having to sit PIE/TIE. Both agencies are vastly different in approach to teaching and i cant see any harm in being assessed in how well you can grasp their own methods.

AFAIA a BSAC OWI can enrol directly on an IDC without any previous PADI certs'.

    SAfe diving,

Yes, and you can enrol on an IDC when you're a PADI DiveMaster, so PADI crossover the BSAC OWI to a DiveMaster, which is about the same in reverse, as BSAC crossover a PADI OWSI as a DiveLeader (I think).

Both then have a few hoops to jump through to get the teaching status.

PADI see BSAC OWI as a prerequisite for the IDC, it doesn't give the DM qualification...

To be honest having done both systems instructor qualifications I can tell which 'cross-over' path is more strenuous! Lots of BSAC Instructors have problems using the PADI system because it is so different to what they are used to. Please note I didn't say it was better. Conversely, I've never known a PADI Instructor not picking up how to use the BSAC system...

    I don't work for PADI!

They said it couldn't be done......

I had a fairly convoluted path.
Started off as BSAC getting as far as dive leader and asst. instructor (ifc).

Then went abroad and did a PADI DM course.
This was one hell of a culture shock learning what to me was a totally different set of methods and systems.

I then went on and did PADI OWSI then applied for the BSAC OWI.

If id have gone straight into padi ide/ie without doing the DM and learning "the padi way" first i'd have failed the IE without any question.

One of the differences as well was going from a club environment into a busy resort environment with big groups to guide, multiple jobs per day and so on.

Agreed. Maybe I shouldhave used the vernacular "You are deemed as experienced as a DiveMaster" rather than implying that you get that certification, that was not my intention.
