Or have things changed that much?
When employed as a trainee DM I'd have been sacked on the spot if I'd seen a few customers before the afternoon dive have a beer and continue to go diving. My responsibility, as a professional (note not PADI professional, just someone who was being employed in the dive industry) would be to stop them. To deny service by reporting it to my boss, and let him deal with it.

Frankly, this is one of those situations I see as indefensible. There's no real point in defending it, and there's no real point us putting nails in a coffin that's already buried - from the OP it clearly happened, and it clearly didn't get reported ("should I have reported it?" means they didn't) - and not to is pretty much indefensible.

It might seem a pretty extreme reaction to a fairly innocuous post, but this is the kind of thing that happens all the time in the dive industry, and it shouldn't. Not if we have any hope that those who are there to help us stay safe are going to do that. Once one standard fails, the house of cards starts to fall...

    Digs.

guess the whole thing here is one of those awkward , just how bad does it haveto be before you complain , in the uk on a whole people arent very good at complaining , ,,,, so , are you a grass for telling ,, or are you an ass for not.
at the end of the day , if your the only one who saw , your the one who decides ,,,
but as mentioned if something happened you can bet your bottom dollar , you were not the onlyone who saw.
i cant help but wonder if the original post had read ,,,, i told that the trainees were in the pub at lunch drinking , how this thread would have ran.

Am I missing something here? Where in the S & P's does it specifically say that I can't have a beer whilst teaching? Who's to say that the guys weren't drinking shandy or even alcohol free beer
As is becoming all too frequent on YD, an OP asks a simple question and then gets bullied/abused/mocked or ridiculed. No wonder people are getting pi$$ed off with the attitude of a few people/cliques on here
When I first joined YD I used to shout about it to anyone who'd listen, now I generally tell them only to join in if they have big shoulders
YD is a fantastic place in which to get decent information/advice but the good stuff is getting severely overshadowed by all the B/S.

I'm nice to nice people - not people who rip me off!
Thanks for validating my above post though.

Not at all. I happen to quite like the taste of Caliber with a blast of lime in it.
I made the statement following someones remark that they should have been failed for breaching standards. Having searched through the S & Ps in my '09 instructor manual, and done the same through my CD manual, I can't find anywhere at all where it specifically says that I cannot have a beer whilst teaching any more than either say I can't have a bacon butty for my lunch?
Please don't for one second think that I'm advocating the use/consumption of alcohol whilst teaching as I can catagorically state that I'm not. However, that is a choice that I make, not a standard imposed upon me.

So by that rationale, they wold be infinitley long and list every drug and or action that could be unprofessional.

I doubt it says not to be racist either, so that's ok is it?

    Grow up!

A PADI pro should act with integrity and professionalism. Drinking whilst teaching is unprofessional and potentially dangerous.

Sorry mate, you're being an arse just for the sake of it if you truly believe what you've written.

i'm glad you added that last bit in because i would be getting in touch with padi otherwise for being a dumb arse,i did say that it was unproffesional, and if i caught another intructor doing it, i would report them without a thought.
i would say it comes under the q a issue

    cheers john

i look at it this way ,,,,
if you had to stand in court and defend your actions should anything happen ,, could you, hand on heart say that you had done your best to protect someone elses well being,,,
if the answer is yes , then its only yourself you answer too ,,, but if you answer no ,, then every one will expect you to answer to them.
