Smile Intro from Newholme

Hello Everyone at YD. Quick intro. I'm Steve Mackay alas Newholme. I am based in Torbay and have been diving for about 9 years. Most of the diving I do is with a local non club based group called Seanik that has become quite well known along the SW Coast. In addition I am the DO for Shark Bait Divers - A small SAA Club.

Sadly, (as far as my own diving is concerned), after taking on the Distribution Rights for Torpedo DPVs I've had little opportunity for diving this season.

Diving wise my main interest is diving unknown wrecks, or at least wrecks not yet Identified, then researching them to so the ID does becomes known. The latest success in this regard is a wreck called the Elsa - She is offshore Dartmouth and is possibly the best preserved and most intact WW1 6000 ton Wreck in the English Channel! John Liddiards article about this wreck and others in South Devon will hopefully be published quite soon . . .

I think YD is a great place to exchange info and ideas and would welcome emails / messages / phone calls from anyone planning exciting diving anywhere between Portland & Lands End.

Welcome to YD Steve.

YD is a great place it is also very adictive so watch it doesn't take up all your time.

The Elsa sounds like a really nice dive, is it quite deep?

As soon as I saw Newholme I thought you had to be 'local', although I have not head of Seanik. Good name though Steve.

Welcome to YD.

Hi Lisa, thanks for reading my intro. Elsa, as with many Dartmouth Wrecks is very unusual. General Seabed depth is around 40 -42 metres, Elsa is upright and some 12-15 metres proud, but the deck depth is 42 metres and its about 54 metres to the prop. As the tide sweeps around her the sea bed has been washed away - or at least 10 / 12 metres of it has...
