Wink I cannot believe....

Hello m'dears. I cannot beleive that I will be completing my open water course in Capenwray this weekend in the snow and ice. I'm going to freeze. Any tips for keeping warm would be appreciated! As would tips on dry suits- I had a real problem last time because the dry suit squeezed my legs until they were vacuum packed- any ideas for combating this?
Best wishes to everyone, Emily

Stay home with a bacon buttie and a mug of hot chocolate!

Failing that, take a big flask of soup to thaw you out between dives. Good luck with the course!

Put hot water into your gloves and hood before your second dive as they will be incredibly cold when you put them back on.

Good luck for the weekend.

Wink

Assuming you are in a semi dry (ie a young wet suit), take another flask of warm water and pour it into the suit at regular intervals on the surface and wear a wind proof outer layer as soon as you leave the water. Heat loss from a w/s due to evaporation can be significant in cold wind.

For the dry suit problem - a tad more air, a better fit, better under suit - you need to experiment.

Enjoy..............

Not the best time of year to be training. It's not always like this, sometimes diving is actually fun, so stay with it

At least you're in a drysuit, a lot of trainees aren't at this time of year which is shocking.

GOOD LUCK!

Just Make sure you have a sealed Reg. Capernwray can be cold after a cold spell and seems to suffer from quite a few free flows. Especially when the temp is around 3-4 deg.

Has your d/s instructor not advised you that it is necesary to inject through the inflate valve some gas (air?) from your d/s hose, fed from your cylinder.
This will insulate you to a degree from the affects of the cold water. You wil probably also be wearing something under your dry suit (at least I hope you will) i.e. an undersuit, this works best when you have air in your suit.

Any and all questions will always be welcome on here, they were all very kind and supportive when I started, especially when I asked real beginners questions such as what's d/s
Answer = dry suit.

Oh and welcom to YD.

Matt

Bloody hell it will be cold, i was up there last weekend, just doing 2 dives before cyprus next weekend and it was 10 degrees in the sump at quarter 10 last sunday morning, the air temp was just a bit lower. Try and keep yourself warm between the dives otherwise you will be uncomfortable and also while the skills are been done, keep yourself warm the best you can.

As with inflating if the squeeze is on your legs, when you go down try and fin straight down and let some air go to your legs then level out but leave them slightly bent so the air doenst pass back up.

Hope it goes well and just enjoy it.

Hi Emily,

some good advice above if you have not got an undersuit then you need to wear warm layer[s] to trap air also many newbies IME try to forgoe hoods and gloves which is a mistake because any benefit you gain in dexterity will soon be lost to the cold.

If you are mask clearing dip you face in the water maskless before you submerge to lessen the shock when you remove it also breathe from your reg as little as possible on the surface to reduce the freeflow risk.

Finally enjoy the experience and welcome to YD and let us know how you go on.

Safe diving,
Steve
