Just to say hello

Hi,

I am a newly qualified OW diver. I completed my course in the UK having already booked my first diving holiday to Egypt. Prematurely perhaps, as I emerged from the flooded gravel pit where I completed my OW dives feeling that I had just undergone an endurance test. Fortunately my trip to Egypt left me with a much more positive impression and I would recommend the Red Sea Diving Safari's Marsa Shagra resort as a great inspiration for nervous new divers and a lot else besides! Looking forward to my next trip and who knows. Maybe it will really catch on.

Jane

welcome to YD Jane, you'll find that feeling goes as your stamina improves and you become accustomed to the gear.

I'm always reminded when I see people on try dives or OW courses slump under the weight of a single 12 at the pool that the kit weighs a bit and swimming around in it is exhausting if you're not used to it.

Don't let that feeling put you off UK diving, after being spoilt by the Red Sea stuff.

UK diving is well worth pursuing, and you don't have all the trauma of luggage allowances, air travel and the pesky kids offering to carry your bag for a fiver at the airport in egypt.....

Hi Stuart,

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Yes, it is all a bit daunting at first. I have contacted a very active local club just this week and hopefully I will get back into icy UK waters with them. They train divers from day 1 in dry suits, presumably to make UK diving more appealing. The truth is though that I love travelling and will generally put up with the hassle for the thrill of being somewhere different and exotic. I am sure I will discover that the UK has much to offer, but what I liked about diving in Egypt was the chance to see a different aspect of a country I have travelled in a few times already and meet people from all over Europe with a passion for diving. I am off to Kenya in January, and it seems I can arrange some diving there, altho' I can't find any helpful info on dive centres along the part of the coast I am going to. Thanks once again for your kind words and enjoy scapa when you are next there. Jane
