Welcome on board Alison. You'll have to excuse The Dud, he's not yet acquired political correctness in his part of the world.

We refer to Aussie as 'the West Island'.

Funny man
We're trying to anex Tasmania but I think we'll leave the bigger island for PNG to claim

I'm another Wellingtonian, sadly not getting much diving in these days due to time constraints :/

Welcome on board from across the Tasman. Hope you enjoy it.

And my middle name has no vowels at all.

I believe the offer was made but they weren't interested, so we got WA instead. (That's the one with all the Gold, iron ore & uranium etc)

You'll have to work harder at it then, I haven't seen any of your RNZR rowing boats struggling against the headwind blowing down the Derwent for ages.

How's your weather? We've got 35C and a 100km/hr - 60mph (I shit you not) northerly at the moment. I just went outside and got an eye/nose/throat full of dust so I'm cowering in the office with the air-con on.

And we were having a BBQ tonight.

Nah, NZ's doing it's best to ruin any reputation of being nautical types as far as I can tell.

That's some freaky weather! Guess it's not really the best for a BBQ then ('Mmm, gritty')

We've just come off a run of hot weather with horrible continual misty rain.
Today however, the signboard outside the office says 27C, the airport tells me 17C
sod-all wind, clear blue skies. Really un-wellington like

Best part: For the first time in about 3 months, we are up to as much as 2/3 of the staff we should have at work (bloody bakers - you ever heard of it being normal to walk off a job with no notice if someone else offers you more?) - this means I get most of the weekend to myself. Might even get out diving! (Although I guess it'll have to be a harbour dive the first time - I'm rusty as blazes and my gear is covered in sawdust )

If you want to dive somewhere more exciting than the harbour - and it is not a strong northerly first thing get yourself out to Rocky Bay in Titahi Bay - good but easy diving in southerly conditions. If you want to dive it first with people who know it, go to Island Bay Divers just after 9am and join their club $30. The club dive will (in the absence of a northerly) be at Rocky Bay tomorrow am.
Cheers

Alison

Wind dropped off a bit and turned westerly about 30 mins later as the cold front came through and temp dropped to about 20-22C - much nicer. Only trouble is there's a big bushfire burning on a wide front about 15kms south, should look good after dark but I'm glad it's not near my house.

Yeah, go get yourself in the water.

Don't you have any independent (ie none LDS/LDC based) dive clubs over there?
