Depends where you are located and what your goals are....

I originally learned with a Scotsac club (Branch List) and I still go along to it when I am in the area.

Scotsac has less of an organised and regimented training scheme than BSAC so if you'd prefer a wider diversity in learning you may be better in a BSAC Club (BSAC Branches).

There are pro's and cons for clubs or just paying and diving now!

There is nothing to say you cant mix and match from each.

There is also a good smaller forum based website relating specifically to Scottish diving over at Conger Alley so the folk there may be able to point you to a club local to you.

Clubs defiantly have distinct advantages that they will take lots and lots of time with you and you'll get to meet lots of other divers on a regular basis and have ready made buddies for when you qualify, you can also get to borrow and try equipment from other club members prior to buying anything from a dive shop.

The downsides, well politics, and in a weird way the time it takes to get you in the sea.

If your goal is to be qualified quickly for a holiday coming up then pay a commercial organisation to train you and when you get back, think about joining a club.

Not sure if that helps...

Personally I've mixed and matched, Scotsac, PADI, TDI and going to do some GUE training and possibly some IANTD..

I like clubs, I like having regular buddies however I also like meeting new folk and diving with strangers from internet forums.... They soon become your friends.
Davie.
