Jenny saw the sea in a book once
Hi from Holland!

Hi, I'm Jenny and (almost) 30 years old. In a few weeks I'll move to Leeds for some months. As I want to get wet in the UK too, I'm eager to meet some nice people to dive with! (I'll bring my own equipment with me, but unfortunately not a car.... )

Some more details about myself:

I dive for about 2 years now (PADI Rescue + Nitrox). So far I've made ~ 90 dives, most of which in Egypt and Indonesia. September last year I've started diving in Holland, just in time to catch the winter season. Unfortunately I don't have a dry suit yet, but I'm getting more and more rugged And gradually it's getting warmer...

So if someone wants to introduce me in UK-waters? Would be great!

Welcome to YD Jenny, and keep your eye open on the 'Trips/spare spaces' section and get your name down on those that you fancy doing. Otherwise there are plenty of people who would do practise dives in quarries whom you could tag along with.

ATB,
Lou

Welcome to YD Jenny. I hope the move to Leeds goes well and that you get some UK diving in during your stay.

Maybe that's the wrong kind of 'wetness'.... Here it's sunny!

Anything I need to take into account before diving in the UK? I think visibility (<2m/6ft) and temperature (now 8oC/46F) are rather similar than in Holland, or do I miss something????

H'mm I dream of it getting that warm.

OK, I think it'll be pretty similar in the UK to what you've experienced in Holland. We have a number of different areas for diving which experience different conditions...

The Channel - nice, full of wrecks, very tidal
The North sea - nice, shallow as seas go - so can be affected by wind / waves (our east coast - so onshore winds a bit bad)
The Atlantic - nice

Specific areas of note -
Oban, west scotland, nice sheltered due to islands, a diving Mecca
Scapa Flow, Orkney isles - scuttled WW1 fleet, an absolute must
St Abbs, east Scotland - vv. scenic diving in the 0-20m range
The Farne Isles, NE england - VV scenic, some wreckage, seals
Bridlington, east coast - reasonable diving
Dover - never been
Plymouth, Falmouth, etc - channel diving off south coast
Skomer Island, SW Wales - very scenic, some wrecks
Oh and tons more.

Leeds is situated as far from the sea as possible, but lies on a good motorway network (we drive on the left).

Post on here or join a trip or two - just get stuck in.

Cheers, Paul

Of course we have the North Sea too... But then on the west. I haven't dived there yet, I need to do some more courses first. (As most North Sea dives starting from Holland are deco-dives with current and tide.)

But thanks for the suggestions! I saw some nice trips on the forum already, and via google I've found also some trips organized by local diving schools. Any recommendations? Are you associated to a diving school?

Is it necessary to get a deep dive speciality before heading to Leeds? I have some experience with diving down to 38 meters, but I'm not certified... (My insurance doesn't care.)

Btw, what's the current water temperature?

Cheers,

Jenny

Welcome to YD Jenny

It's not necessary to get the deep speciality as there is plenty of stuff to dive upto 30m. You may still want to get it at some stage though as a couple of the inland sites are deeper than that and there are some nice wrecks in the 30-40m range.

Hi Jenny from Holland!

Welcome to the UK and Yorkshire Divers.

Your a brave girl to think about diving here without a drysuit.

You should be able to find some places near Leeds. Not sure whatthere is for PADI clubs / centres however I am sure one of the locals will be able to help you out.

Have fun, Dive Safe.

Regards

Davie
