Forums are also a great place to find totally innacurate information from faceless people who may have no experience, or very little.

If you don't know whether an Instructor may be trying to sell you an unsuitable bit of kit, then buy a book or talk to someone with a unit who is diving it regularly.

Haven't seen Pirates of the Carribean yet, so not a clue what you are on about. Girls are far toooooo expensive and they talk too much. ( Joke ) emoticons not working.
I agree, but finding a "good" instructor is the problem. Most I have come accross claim 100% success rate makes them a good instructor. However, I choose my instructors by their failure rate, I think qualifications should be earnt not bought (you buy the training). Good intructors are a rare commodity.

Forums on the other hand, by their very nature, give both sides of an argument. If you listen to both sides of an argument, rather than just one, you learn about the subject, and then can make an informed choice. Once you have this level of knowlage is the time you need to go and find an instructor, then you can spot a good instructor when you see one.

Someone with a unit will either love it or hate it, and it will be the units fault not the divers, another source of biased information. However, if you put that diver in an argument about the kit, the reasons he loves it or hate come out. Which is what a forum does.

And watch the Pirates of the caribean it is good (to all other posters - no I do not want to start a discussion on the pirates of the Caribean - unless it is about the upturned boat being used as a sub)

3. Already got one.
4. Try doing that to the other side of the world - do you quit diving for 6 weeks before and after the trip?
5. Fettling is all a part of diving a RB
6. So would you rather be cluttered all of the time or have an excellent WOB 99% of the time (apart from when you're in some ridiculous position)
7. See 5
8. I think a Rich Pyle quote is that if economics are influencing your diving then you shouldn't be doing it. Buying a rebreather cos its cheap could be a one way street. Buying a rebreather for valid reasons and then having it being cheap as well is a bonus. But I reckon that the average KISS owner could easily have got a YBOD for what they ended up spending on the KISS.
9. Rather than cost, I'd suggest that anything that breaks on a KISS is fixable by the user - I've known several Inspirations go back to the factory with intermittent electrical faults.
10.
1. Agreed, but doesn't mean it can't happen, this is what back ups are for.
2. you die, but I would be prepared to ignor a working inspirations displays whilst dealing with an entanglement for instance, and if something goes wrong you can hear it in the cange in serlanoid rythm
3. Lets skip this in future, accesories like OC/CC mouth pieces and wings are interchangable
4. I have gone back to OC in the interim, besides long haul luggage allowances are far more generous.
5. Absolutly, if you don't like sorting out kit DON'T BUY A RE_BREATHER!!!!
6. I don't know I haven't dived a KISS (but like to), my single sided view is that you are getting a cluttered chest as the down side to better control, you can see your lungs, dil flushing has got to be easier, reaching multiple add gas buttons has got to be easier and more user friendly option. That one possition? it will be the one required to get into your favourite cave (Sods Law)
7. see 5.
8. Total Agreement.
9. So you can repair a OC/CC mouthpiece, but a couple of wires have got you stumped? You have to know your kit and be able to repair your kit, but there are limits on both systems.
10. I am trying to get an Inspiration lid made out of Carbon Fibre would that alter the scale?

No one upmanship required, I would like to have a go with all of them on the list, don't thing I'll manage it but I'd still like to. Anyone want to swop a go with an inspiration for a go with a KISS? (I am not an instructor, so what I am suggesting is naughty - but who cares)

As a CCR virgin (for 13 more days) I can only comment based on reading, talking and my opinions.

I'm buying a YBOD, but I do like the KISS, and I also like the Ourouboros.

The Oroubouroubouroubouros looks like it's been hewn out of a solid lump of stainless and carbon fibre - it really looks "engineered" and I really like that, being an engineer myself. It also seems to have every bell and whistle you could imagine, with all sorts of flexibility for multiple offboard gasses, and different scrubber sizes etc. I actually voted for the this one.

I like the simplicity of the KISS, I understand the physics behind how it works, think it's very clever, like the clutterlessness of the front, BUT don't like the fact that there is a fundamental mechanical limit on it's use - I know it's a very deep limit and wouldn't prevent any diving I want to do for the time being, but psychologically a limit is a limit (this is not a reason for not going for a KISS, it's just how my head works )

The YBOD is I'm sure the result of a bunch of engineers designing a rebreather, then the marketing people turning it into something affordable and consumable for the masses. I had a long think about whether I wanted to wait for the additional toys coming on the Evo, but couldn't justify the extra costs. The current unit is established and has a strong following.

One feature I really like on the PRISM is the analogue display for giving O2 cell reading which, being driven by the cell outputs themselves, works with no battery power at all...a nice, clever touch.

Chose a draeger ray coz I had done all the reading and decided that while I could pay my money, do the course, remortgage the house and get a buddy, I can get a better idea of whether I wanted one in the long term by starting on something v simple.
The ray is costing 550 quid (brandnew), the course cost 230 quid. So if I like it, next year I can get a buddy or whatever, If I don't then I can leave it in the back of the cupboard. But after doing the course, I decided I like it.
I get experience of looking after the unit. I get the basics of breathing from a bag and going up and down, and I will be in a better position to really decide what I want after 6 months or so.

I used to be indecisive but now I am not so sure.....

OK F**K THIS

After a few days of serious fills, 02 clean, tank availability problems for a measly three-day trip Andyp and I have had enough and am going for it.
I want the KISS and Andyp wants the Inspiration. So I have compromised in the effort to keep matching rigs and we are going to get second hand Inspirations dive them for a while and if I cant stand the thing we are putting orders in for the KISS.

Inspiration course booked for our trip to Dahab if not before.

Any one spots an Inspiration for reasonable money let me know.

Hi

I have a question: I looked at the Kevin Gurr rebreather page here:

http://www.therebreathersite.nl/ouro...rebreather.htm

It has backmounted counterlungs and yet I can't see them, only the CD wing.

Where are the counterlungs?

Andy

PS Don't get all excited, I'm not interested in buying one, but just curious.

This is pretty much the same place as they are in the Biomarine Mk15s

Yes I definetely fancy the KISS. If only I had the time & a buddy to dive with then maybe I would.
