Question YBOD - Why?

OK, time for a semi-serious contribution.

Why call rebreather's "yellow box of death"?

Whats wrong with them? (apart from all the training and cost of equipment)

The YBOD is only one particular rebreather, the Inspiration and it's called the Yellow Box Of Death, because it's a Yellow box and it can kill you if you use it wrong.

There's also "Beanie and his amazing technicolour dream box" which I think Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote a musical about

It is also known as the Yellow Box Of Debt - but that's just cos it costs loads!

However any rebreather is capable of killing it's "pilot" if they don't know what they're doing. Hence the warnings on KISS units...

I think the first slide on an Open Water course should be:

"DIVING CAN KILL YOU"

Some students might take things a bit more seriously...

I think "Cato" has been the best term so far after Burt Kwouk in the Clouseau movies... yellow and keeps trying to kill you.

Don't know if it'll spend all night in the fridge waiting for it though.

People who wanted to vilify the Inspiration coined the name and the owners took it as a joke. You will have noticed that rebreather people seem to like the things and often the rebreather owners are the ones that do a lot of diving which is why they justified spending all that money on one in the first place so calling them names isn't gong to phase them any.
Some people don't, quite justifiably, like the name but it's here and it isn't going to go away now. Frankly we joke about it as we do our predive checks but rebreather diving favours the fastidious and we may make excuses for our careful procedures, "Just another minute while I find out what's going to kill me today...", but we still do them.

Hello,

Does the Insp. is called YBOD due to DIR (I think GI) that said that this Rb should be sold with a shovel? As it is always trying to kill you!

Regards

Pierre

Smile Kato

I think Juz mentioned this on a different thread a while back, but Inspirations were called "Kato" at our last club.

~the yellow assassin from The Pink Panther

still the name I prefer

although if it's in purple..........
