| If we have two short dips, then a couple is possible. Problem for me is that I have to get home by 1530 in Newark for my little one. I can usually be there by about 9.45. If we only manage one dive, then so be it, it's better to have got wet after all

| Stoney today Loading the car this morning got me thinking, as my weight harness is covered in ice, it might have been cold last night. Good planning and a kind hearted wife meant that the hallway had been the overnight dive store, so the cylinders and regs were reasonably warm and dry. So off to Stoney. I eventually found Phil who was disguising himself by carry normal fins and arriving in someone else’s (Stewbie’s) car. I had disguised my car my having the dented panel repaired. So introductions and standard pi55 taking over with we discussed a plan, jump in and get wet. Stewbie evidently wanted more meat on the plan so we opted for the Cessna at the far side. A quick buddy check of sorts for Stewbie, as Phil was already off and into the water-he does get a bit keen at times. I was using my twinset loaded with 37% nitrox and 80 bar, which does not seem a great deal, but looked sufficient for the plan. I had added an extra two kilos to allow for the partially empty cylinders. The descent took some time as I took longer than usual to empty the suit and wing of air. Off down the road we went. Torch working at the second attempt today, so not looking too bad. A quick check on the air consumption and I was in guzzler status, breathing rate was rapid, and I was not relaxed. But could not tell why. Checked the slob knob was open just in case. Anyway Phil and Stewbie seemed happy enough as we formed a V formation and trusting to my navigation. Finally we reached the Cessna and my air was down to 40 bar. Now for a dive like this I would not normally be concerned, but given my apparent consumption I thought it best to put my smb up and head up. Having signalled the gas situation Phil offered a reg to fill the smb. I suspect Phil uttered some surprise at my gas usage, he certainly said something else a couple of minutes later. Which would have been good had I completed my checks(the smb often get unclipped from the smb during unclipping, so I always check), so after emptying the smb-not fun, clipping the smb back together and much faffing due to the drygloves. I looked for Phil, who was making strange signals across his throat. So I used my own air and inflated the smb. At ten metres I decided to switch back to my main reg rather than clip this off. At which point the octopus on bungy round my neck starts to freeflow (bugg@r). rather than waste the gas I put this reg into my mouth stopped the freeflow and problem sorted. So why the post? Well I will let Phil post something about his experiences and Stewbie might also. Lets just say that I became a tad focussed on deploying my smb. In reality I was concerned that I might be underweighted for the ascent and need the smb to control my ascent rate. Having checked my gas consumption it works out at 17 lpm SAC which is high for me, normally about 12-14 lmp over the winter. But it felt a lot higher. With hindsight I suspect the temp drop in the water reduced the pressure quite significantly. For anyone feeling complacent do practise those shutdowns, I know Phil is feeling chuffed today. Signals, always worth going through a few so that communication works. |
