| SATURDAY 12TH JANUARY Well, all you hardened divers will be keen to try out the Christmas presents and actually get in the water. We all know that those inland sites are useful for training but there's no mystery or surprises.... except perhaps the enormous pike at Stoney or the fact that you can grab a quick snack at 20m+ in the air pocket in the Hydrobox there.... The open coastal waters of the North Sea beckon and the Farne Islands (as you all know - a magnet for marine life and wrecks) is the destination. Now some of you will be saying it's too cold and some of the divers out there (we all know them) would rather dive into a pint and a pub than actually get wet between Oct and May! No worries - whatever makes you happy! All I can say is that the water temp is certainly manageable for anyone with a decent undersuit and if in doubt add 1-2kg to your belt and try a Helly Lifa top and a fleece underneath. The temp "topside" on the boat can be damn nippy but again perfectly manageable with a flask/ some high energy food, a warm hat / gloves and a coat if you need it (William will ensure that there's coffee/tea for everyone) The weather is always the crucial factor and any wind stronger 24-25mph will probably put pay to any diving unless the whole group is particularly experienced in diving in rough conditions. The met office report for Boulmer seems to be the most reliable indication of weather at the Farnes >> Met Office: Boulmer: forecast Places can be booked with the skipper (William Shiel) on 01665 721297. As always you are responsible for your own dive planning/ safety/ buddies etc. I am just highlighting the fact that the boat will be heading out diving and there will be places - first come basis. HAPPY CHRISTMAS & ALL THE BEST FOR A HEALTHY, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Safe diving, Ben "Seal diver" YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. |

| Is this william sheils boat with a lift? I'm a muppet just re read original post might make a few calls |
| ||||
| Yes. William Shiels boat Glad Tidings with an excellent lift. Yes Marky Mark - like your comments about there being "no season"... sadly few divers even "up north" prepared to get in the sea off the Farnes between now and end of March! Summer time hundreds of divers now it's hard work convincing enough people to justify a boat! Hope to see you there, Safe diving, Ben "Seal diver" YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. |

There's more trip reports about dives down south over the winter than up there.

Ben did a thread or two to try and drum up some more interest, but sadly the gig was cancelled as only 5 were brave enough to put their names down for it. I had other plans otherwise I'd have made it 6! Saturday incidentally was a fantastic day, just like a summers day, but the viz would have been quite normal - around 2-3m if you're lucky. Keep an eye on the dive trip threads for more details, or, contact William direct if you have a group who want to go out. You don't have to wait to be asked, William will take anyone, as long as the numbers are accepatable. Graham
