Because the Beaver one replaced another one which always read the same as the Suunto... unless they were both wrong all along!

if it is fairly off from true reading, I would probably guess the tube/wire whatever you want to call it has stretched too far and not returning to its original position. after a while it does happen and there is nothing you can do about it as far as i know. like a spring thats been stretched too far.

you can youtube how they make a pressure gauge, i remember watching one quite a while back. wasnt very good but gave a brief overview. i dont think it actually showed the mechanism (its not rocket science). if your going to scrap this one, I recommend you take it apart and have a look. some of the gauges you can pop open with a bit of elbow grease.

as for linearity in terms of its error? I doubt it will be.

    .

The tube thinggy is called a

    bouden tube.

It is a sealed curved tube that is linked to
the needle by a small cog and a few levers.
As the pressure increases inside the tube there
is more surface area on the outer side of the tube
than the inner (because of the curve). Because the
outer side of the tube has a greater surface area a
larger pressure is excerted onit and the curve tube
trys to straighten. This action is transfered through
the cogs and linkages to the needle.

For what they cost buy another and strip the other
    down.

    Cheers taz.
