Arrow UK Diving Recompression Centres & Chambers

Where is there a list of the distribution of these centres... just in the UK area.
Am well familiar with placement and work of the the South Devon DDRC... just wondered how many other centres are around.

Are there part-time seasonal centres as well as full-time research centres?

quick note as to the UK geographic placement and size of the one you know of would be appreciated.

cheers

already had this one from google..... but soon noted that Bovisand is still listed, where as thought it wound up so therefore out of date.

This is a good info base to find... thanks. Probably central for direct confirmation on up to date status as well. Fine info, much appreciated`

British Hyperbaric Association Categories

Category 1
Facilities should be capable of receiving patients in any diagnostic category who may require Advanced Life Support either immediately or during hyperbaric treatment.
Category 2
Facilities should be capable of receiving patients in any diagnostic category who are judged by the referring medical officer not to be likely to require Advanced Life Support during hyperbaric treatment.
Category 3
Facilities should be capable of receiving emergency referrals of divers and compressed air tunnel workers. These facilities should also be capable of providing elective treatment of residual symptoms of decompression illness.

Patients may be accepted, in the name of the Medical Director (whose role is defined in para 24 of the Cox Report) even when no Hyperbaric Duty Doctor is available at the time of referral provided, in the view of referring clinician, the patients condition demands immediate action. This does not obviate the need for discussion with the Hyperbaric Duty Doctor who should attend the patient as soon as is practicable.
Category 4
Facilities should be capable of receiving elective and emergency referrals of patients in any diagnostic category who are judged by the referring medical officer, on the advice of the Hyperbaric Duty Doctor, not to be likely to require access during hyperbaric treatment. Normally monoplace chambers are not suitable for the immediate treatment of acute decompression illness.
Divers requiring emergency treatment for decompression illness should ideally always be taken to a BHA Category 1 chamber, if airlifted in England, this is always the case.

I have not included emergency contact numbers as some chambers do not accept emergency referrals (especially Cat4 chambers). In an emergency either seek advice from the Coastguard (999 or VHF Ch16) or the DDRC (01752 261910 - emergency contact only). DO NOT go directly to your geographically nearest chamber as they may be able to help (eg the chamber may be being service, always go thorough the CG or DDRC who maintain lists of chambers and their status.

Before anyone chimes in with the monoplace chamber at NDC Chepstow, this chamber has no medical cover and is only for recompression "first aid", not treatment.

Hopefully this will be of use to someone

In the event of a diving emergency DO NOT contact any chamber directly.

ALWAYS contact one of the following:

Coastguard - 999 or VHF 16

DDRC - 01752 261910

RN Duty Doctor - 07831 151523

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary - 01224 681818

I have updated the list from information below, although I can find no other reference to the Stromness chamber, so have ommited it for now.

25/11/04

The one in Tyne & Wear is not in use anymore, plus there is one in Stromness.

Thanks for the update Helen. The Toxbase list has the Stoney chamber until recently, and that has been out of us for how long?

This is why I suggested always contacting the CG or DDRC, who maintain up-to date lists, I will update this one accordingly.

Thanks

Dom

Can we have this one pinned or placed somewhere prominent

I think this is valuable information and should be available to those who frequent this site.. could we have it either pinned or placed somewhere prominent?

Of course, I hope that none of us would ever need any their valuable services.. I have several of these numbers to hand, just in case someone needs the information.

Dive safe.

It is valuble if it is correct and upto date. I have to say I have never heard of a chamber in Manchester. My Advice would be contact DDRC or Duty Diving Doc and they will put you in touch with the nearest one.

If there is one in Manchester I will stand corrected

Agreed.

First course of action would be to contact DDRC or the Royal Navy diving Doc. Not everyone (unfortunately) knows how to contact them.. Just am just getting at having a post, which is kept prominant, that contains these details.. It would be an overhead to try to maintain an up to date list - and what happens for the details are wrong - time is wasted.

So yep, just keep the numbers of those that shouldn't change..

Ignore the Manchester Number

Please can you ignore the Manchester address as I have just phoned them and it is a hospital ward at North Manchester Hospital. Please do not contact this number.
