HM Coastguard - Diving Incidents

9th August 2005 – Brixham Coastguard.

A diver made a rapid ascent after a dive on the Rosehill from the dive boat Sea King. He was showing no symptoms of DCS but was given fluids and oxygen on board the dive boat. Medical advice was sought via Brixham Coastguard. Specialist advice from the DDRC was that evacuation and recompression were not required unless symptoms developed and the diver could go home. The diver and dive boat skipper were both happy to follow this advice.

13th August 2005 - Portland Coastguard

A Mayday call was received from the dive boat Goose which had an unconscious diver on board. Coastguard Helicopter R-WB airlifted the diver direct to Dorchester A & E for assessment then onwards to the Poole recompression chamber. In the meantime, another 2 divers who had undertaken the same dive were airlifted by Coastguard Helicopter R-IJ to the Poole chamber.

Ouch. Never heard of a two chopper incident before. R-IJ apparently based at Solent Coastguard.

Goose was doing Warrior this morning. 54m.

Unhappy well done

well done the coastguard !!

These incidents seem to be happening to often !!
Me.. thinks poor training, and lack of experience are the main factors !!

Team of five divers. After the gas switch all seemed well until one started toxing within two or three minutes. One of the divers switched him back and brought him up, one other diver followed, the other two did their deco. Helicopter picked up the first diver as he was needing more urgent attention. Other two divers went on second chopper although had no DCI symptoms. I've just been told everyone is fine and the toxing diver will make a full recovery

I didn't see much as we went in before them and the first helicopter had already been and gone before we surfaced.

Not fair to name anyone at the moment so I won't. Its just my opinion but I think he switched to the wrong gas.

It was an excellent dive though and the skipper, the team effected, the coastguard, and all the other divers acted very calm and professionally

Andy
