| Ya gonna love this .............. MARITIME AND COASTGUARD AGENCY News Release (130/06) issued by The Government News Network on 17 May 2006 PLEASE NOTE EMBARGO Not for publication or broadcast before 0900 hours Friday 19 May 2006 One of the nation's favourite public information films - Joe and Petunia - has been given a 21st century makeover. The animated characters first appeared on our screens in 1968 urging people to dial Her Majesty's Coastguard on 999 for coastal emergencies. The Central Office of Information (COI) has rescued the film from the archives on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to commemorate COI's 60th anniversary. The original film has been digitally re-mastered and its original features have been updated to reflect society today. Petunia - still voiced by Wendy Craig - is now listening to an iPod and reading a glossy gossip magazine. Joe's knotted hanky has been swapped for a trendy check cap and he dials 999 from his mobile phone when they finally realise a man at sea needs help. John Astbury, MCA's Chief Executive, said: "The original film was extremely effective in raising awareness that HM Coastguard is a 999 emergency service. This message is equally important today so we were delighted to work with COI to re-launch the film with a modern twist." The film recently scooped third place in a BBC online poll run in association with The National Archives and COI. Alan Bishop, COI's Chief Executive, said: "COI has been producing public information films for 60 years and they have an enduring appeal. It's great that we can celebrate this work by combining the past and present." Wendy Craig, the actress who provided the voiceover for Petunia, comments: "I hope people who saw the film first time around will have fun spotting the changes." I remember this the first time round

Oh well it is gone 9AM here, and it is already in the public domain so I cant see any issue with it being here a bit sooner than later, just so that those people who are up all night waiting can go back to bed at ease. Obviously if it was a serious issue Andy would have kept his gob shut in the first place rather than providing enough information to find the info via google MARITIME AND COASTGUARD AGENCY News Release (130/06) issued by The Government News Network on 17 May 2006 PLEASE NOTE EMBARGO Not for publication or broadcast before 0900 hours Friday 19 May 2006 One of the nation's favourite public information films - Joe and Petunia - has been given a 21st century makeover. | Scene: Sailor in small boat struggling against high waves and wind. Meanwhile a couple sit picnicking on a - strangely windless - clifftop, looking out to sea. PETUNIA (eating ice cream): Oh it's ever so nice and peaceful up here, Joe. Nice view, too. JOE: Aye, very nice Petunia. And look at that nice little boat. He's having a lot of fun out there in his nice little dinjy. That's what they call them, you know, sailing dinjies. PETUNIA: Aren't they nice people at our hotel, Joe? (Joe, looking through binoculars, sees sailor hanging on to his boom for dear life.) JOE: Hey hey! Hello! Now he's splicing his main brace. PETUNIA (focusing on ice cream): Though I don't think the man on table six is very nice. JOE (still looking at sailor): Ey, do you think he's in trouble, Petunia? PETUNIA: Ooh no, Joe, he's just enjoying himself on holiday. (Sailor is thrown into sea, then waves frantically for help.) JOE: Oh, he's decided to have a swim. Now he's going to climb back again. I expect that water's a bit cold, don't you? Oh, oh, he's changed his mind. Now he's waving to us. Coooeeee! I can't say I recognise him, though. Cartoon Ask for the coastguard PETUNIA: Well he must know us. Maybe it's the gent on table number six? JOE: No it's not him, he's much...Oh now he's shouting. LOVELY DAY, IS'NT IT? SAILOR: HELP HELP! DIAL 999 AND ASK FOR THE COASTGUARD. JOE: I can't hear a word he's saying, you know. (Sailor's words appear in a speech bubble: in a postmodern joke, somehow Joe is able to read the speech bubble.) JOE, reading: Dial 999... and... ask... for... the... coast...guard... Well I never! (Joe runs to phone box and dials 999.) VOICEOVER: If you see a boat you think may be in distress, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard. ![]()
