Thumbs up A word of caution...

Not to pour water on this endeavour, but might I suggest that anyone embarking on this or a similar venture read the following book:

'The Frogmen: The Story of the Wartime Underwater Operators'

by Waldron & Gleeson

The very birth of the use of reberathers by the Royal Navy. Apart from being a true and highly readable story, it details the designs, misfires, mistakes and the high loss-rate of 'frogmen' who were used, to some degree at least, as guinea pigs for a then new (but needed) concept in diving.

Good luck Digger - just be careful

Yeah Bren have ordered that form waterstones so should be here for Christmas at teh earliest - those guys had big brass ones IMHO - talking about bravery - all of the guys who served in units like that should get some form or recognition. Basically they were guinea pigs in those days and also had to deal with getting blown up with poor charges or and dying on experimental rebreathers all that before the germans! Not that it should be like the Yanks who when they catch a cold in a war zone are 'decorated' but so many men gave their lives for nothing. Look at Laba in Mirbat 1972, now that man should have got the VC but got nothing at all. We need a balance.

Anyway Diggers pics look scary as hell sure wouldnt find me a stoney with that never mind the rebreather

The guy in the BSAC handbook in full navy rebreather kit is the harbourmaster in Amble (where i used to dive out of). We were round his house paying the harbour fees and he dug out the original pic!

Aye, some guy he was too. I know guys who were on the 'Ops Claret' in Malaya/Borneo who knew him before he joined the Regiment - pure warrior class, as are most of the Fijians who come across. Operating a 25-pounder artillery piece on his jack (normally a three-man task): Laba-laba actually got the MM, albeit postumously, but I see what you mean mate. Trooper Tobin, on the other hand, after havng his jaw completely shot away, didn't die as a result of the action - he was to die later in a services hospital in the UK, after a piece of tooth made its way down into his lungs and became infected - the infection was what killed him.

Mirbat - you couldn't write fiction like it! 8 guys verses 400+ adoo.

That's a fairly hefty scrubber there - any idea how much it holds and duration? (I assume the "instructions" are on the website?)

I've got an original Fenzy going the same way - but the scrubber's probably going to be an old baked bean tin or something

True bravery in every respect.
Lest we forget.
