Ron Micjan of www.tmishop.com has created a Dolphin CCR course for one of the major agencies and they are currently testing it before going public.

I suppose that it wont be long before those of us who have designed, built and dived our boxes so long ago will all of a sudden be incompetant and have to do a course.

No doubt we will have to explain our designs and limitations to the instructor so he can repeat it back to us for a tidy sum around the 500 squid mark.

I doubt there wil be any "grandfather" rights certs going. Look forward to more bullshit restrictive stuff from the dive industry.

Next you wont be able to service your own regulators, oh, what? you cant?

Apart from the basics of rebreather diving that is generic to all rebreathers (which you can easily learn from a good book like Bosanic's Rebreather books) then who is qualified to teach you the specifics of diving your own rebreather that you have designed and built yourself?

I did a generic rebreather course with Kevin Gurr years ago, I might as well have spent the £100 in the pub for what I learned. A bigger waste of money I have yet to encounter.

Brent,
Couldn't agree more.

I am somewhat tired of a marketplace/industry that uses their interpretation of HSE regulations and hides behind red tape and more 'self' produced regulations to enable it to milk people of their hard earned cash.

This is not just limited to diving but to other sectors as well. I'm not advocating a free for all but the application of common sense and personal responsibility.

If I want to kill myself by trying to do a trimix dive on a CCR unit without any certification it is my business and the fishes not anybody elses.!!

Before the bleeding hearts and bleating ones come out with the phases of.... Oh but what about the people who have to come and find your body (they don't have to.) or but think about your family (I do and I am well insured and if it doesn't make them rich at least it pays off the mortgage).

Off soapbox -
Grit teeth and go and attend the rest of my Mod1 Inspiration training. Just two more weeks of the part time activity and I can start diving again, unless they bring is a rule that says you need to have your nanny with you when you get a fill..

Playing Devils Advocate most insurances small print require you to dive within your certification....

So if you go do that trimix dive without being certed and cark it - don't be suprised if they don't pay out!

Stuart

Ps Not saying I agree with it but that's the way it is....

Well, I've done none whatsoever other than asking a load of questions of people who know what they're doing, reading as much as I could get my hands on, and playing on t'internet when I can. That said, they're not complicated things, and if you built it then in the first 6 months you'll know most of the tricks it can play on you. I'm just getting to know my baby now, just as I strip her down and make another one from her cold dead body. Unveiling coming soon, as well as a full teardown as soon as I find the time Stuart!

I have no insurance to worry about, as I don't really own anything that insurance would cover me for, and last discussion I had with a life assurance firm was not a positive one!

I have been talking to Andy H about the PSA RB course, which he thinks might well cover me for a homebuild, but that will be entirely at an instructors discretion, and I'd imagine they'd want to know everything about it before you went for a course. By the nature of the things you're unlikely to find someone else who's got a similar enough unit to be able to do a course with several others so cost could be a major factor.

I don't worry about it. The sort of people who build units aren't the sort to worry a great deal about a qualification to be honest. Part of the reason we do it is because we don't like what's out there already, including the ticket in some cases.
