Like all problems you should divide and conquor.

I can't really advise on the gas analysis abilities of a duck, however -

We like a bit of duck, and here in KL they come with feet. We have not really accepted the local opinion that chicken and duck feet are a delicasy so my first task is to remove them along with the head before a roast can commence.

Hence if you would like I can send you some duck feet so that you can trial their efficency separately to the gas analysis phase.

I am afraid I cannot trial the feet for you as we find them quite repulsive and dont really want to take them on a dive trip with us, on the up side, I suppose we might get some fish and shark interest......

thats a deliberate link as the picture is a bit rough

I am a bit concerned about bird flu though, do you think that it will be ok to post the feet?

I have noticed whilst out at sea there are a noticable lack of suitable trees for ones budgies to perch in during there surface interval.
However in my favour I did see on one wreck a rather nice dogfish meaning that at some point in evolution a dog did presumably carry out a mating dive with some species of fish, now the dogfish was not St Bernard sized so maybe I could use a smaller breed of dog ??
The use of ducks is something I am going to experiment with further once the basic budgie design is completed, I like the idea of the webbed feet providing propulsion, maybe with a good sized duck in each side of the breathing loop they could not only provide gas analysis (something I am not tottaly sure is within a ducks ability) but also with 2 webbed feet either side finning away my duck model rebreather could be the first to incorperate its own Scooter.
Mark,
Whilst reflecting on our trip at the weekend, it has become obvious to me that the perfect bird for you to use is the ubiquitous seagull!
As we observed,it requires no perch, faithfully remains by the boat whilst miles ofshore, and requires only the odd mars bar wrapper for additional sustenance!
It itself is naturally involved in closed circuit life support as per the tapeworm!
As I remember from my limited Biology education, said seagull poos into the ocean discharging worm eggs,
Poo is then devoured by fish,
Fish is caught and devoured with eggs by ourselves,
who in turn develop worm and deposit via the sewage system, back into the ocean where said seagull complete's the loop by enjoying a snack of said discharge!
