Question wanting to knock up a batch of calcium hydroxide (Sorb) in my kitchen

Watto dudes

Ive got a couple of old plant pots full of old scrubber material kicking arround in my garage which I belive this to be calcium carbonate, just wondering if there is a way for example dumping a load in a pan heating it up & splashing a little water on to re generate it into calcium hydroxide.

Plus is there any way of testing it other than re filling a container up & knocking it out on Ebay waiting to see if you get any negitive feedback ???

Not sugesting anyone does that... but come on Big Si you must know the answer ??????????

erm long time since i did chemistry so apologies if wrong but

calcium carbonate CaCO3 + H20 gives Ca(OH)2 + CO2 which would relaese hydrogen gas also

feck my teacher was right I will need this later on in life aaarrggghhh why cant I remember this.

to make calcium hydroxide starting from calcium carbonate: heat up your CaCO3 (limestone) very hot eg in a limekiln.you then get calcium oxide (quicklime). add water (very carefully) and you get calcium hydroxide and lots of heat. CaO is caustic.

you don't get hydrogen. It's not practical as a kitchen experiment as you won't get it hot enough and lime (CaO) is relatively cheap as it's put on the land and used for traditional mortar for historic buildings

Well that sounds perfectly acceptable then

I would suggest wrapping it all up in foil (Shiny side in, of course) to keep more heat in, you're bound to reach the required temperatures then

Best of luck Dave, nice knowing you!
