| I think the standard is five days but many employers give more to keep their staff happy. I was signed off for six weeks by my doctor a couple of years ago but my company kept me on full pay for the whole time I was off.

| Is there a difference between Statutory Sick Pay and Sick days? I thought you got full pay for as many Sick Days as your company will allow (I don't know if there is a min/max figure for the number of Sick Days a company can give you - or if they can be carried over from one yr to the next), and after that you go onto Statutory Sick Pay for up to 6 months. Not sure what happens after that.

| I have been stung before with this before - when i worked as a waitress and broke my arm i had to live off nothing for 2 months as i hadnt been earning enough in the 2 months before i broke my arm - it had to avarage out at 66 quid which i was about £4 short of. The nice people at the Alnwick Garden sacked me since i couldnt work due to the plaster cast.

| Helen Isn't SSP something you claim from the government when you don't have a company sick pay scheme. I currently get 10 days, but this is discreationary, in otherwords if the company thinks you are abusing the system then they don't have to pay it. It also is not as some people think an additional 10 days holiday. In my previous company we accrued sick pay, (days of unions) because when I had my knee operations I was entitled to more than 20 weeks, I only used 8 weeks though. |

Full detail of the SSP rules are here, http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/empl...loyee_sick.htm they are a bit heavy going but the rule on when they should stop paying is here and is very clear http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/empl...ee_sick.htm#7c

| Mr Mares had a severe whiplash from a car crash, and was off of work initially for 14 weeks on full pay, they also sent him to a private Harley street Doctor and paid for Physio-therapy privately. Over the next 6 months he was off of work for about 7 weeks all on full pay. In contrast, I have been off sick with a buggered Kidney, and fought to get 1 weeks pay. It all depends on the company you work for. |
