The original thread reminded me of my wifes experience of an exchange trip. She was somewhat isolated. However she did learn an awful ot about the Germans. You see she spoke German and the family did not know that she did.
She gave the game away on the final day by laughing at a joke on TV that in theory she could not possibly understand.

just a quick note to say thanks for your reply and to dispel any suspicion you may have had that my remarks as regards Hastings were directed at your good self...

I fully appreciate the tone and the purpose of your original thread. If you'd only posted the Hastings thing I would have had the hump. As it was, the second post relating to other examples of the brainless xenophobia a depressing number amongst us are capable of, switched me on to the point you were making.
I know you weren't having a go at Hastings, but I thought I'd drop that reply in there - hopefully to dispel an ugly myth or two.
