Exclamation Ebay - Fraud Warning!

Auction site warns users of 'second chance' con
(Filed: 16/10/2004)

Internet fraudsters are targeting users of the online auction site eBay in what has become known as the "second chance" con.

The criminals contact failed bidders through their eBay user name. Then, often claiming to be the original seller, they offer an alternative to the item the bidder had wanted.

If successful, the fraudsters may then be able to cash a money transfer or cheque from the buyer or, if payment is by credit or debit card, the criminals can use the numbers on the cards.

Another tactic is to get users to visit a website to "update" their eBay account details.

The website is designed to look like eBay but is a front aimed at obtaining credit or debit card numbers.

Garreth Griffith, from eBay UK, said: "There are bad apples out there. We are trying everything we can to get these guys and we work with the police who do prosecute."

The auction site advises all users to visit its online safety centre to find out what dangers to be aware of and the precautions to take.

If users receive a suspicious email, it suggests sending the message to spoof@ebay.co.uk for the company to check whether it is genuine.
