    White Washing Pine

    Hey all,

I'm just curious as to whether any of YD's DIY experts can tell me, firstly in the picture below are the cabinets "White Washed" or is it another finish I'm looking at? And if it is white wash or some other finish, how to achieve the same thing? I'm having a kitchen custom built but I'm unsure how to get the effect I'm after. Here's the pic.

I believe the effect is called 'Liming', although it's not very effective on pine. You can get white wood dye which mimics the effect.

It was very trendy a while ago but I reckon it looks naff.

Oh come on, that kitchen looks awesome! Liming you say? Sounds complicated I'll investigate.

It's a nice enough kitchen but only because it's not full of diving crap. Wait til you get some non-colour-coordinated stuff in there, then see how awesome it looks!
If you have to think about it for more than thirty seconds, you probably shouldn't get in.

if you want a matt look the product is lime wax (which was made popular in 90s by the DIY programs.

A more more modern spin is a satin effect - I think we used one coat of a satin wood paints or was it varnish??? - on bare wood (we have exposed timber beams in roof of our new extension - it lets the grain through but gives it a sleeker appearance- product was a bit like clear varnish with a dollup of white matt in it - so it made the wood translucent. This effect is less brash than limewax

Same kitchen with some colour in it. Granted it helps having a 6' tall super model knocking up some grub too but you get the idea.

What I found amusing when watching the show, was that she never once used the £6,000 Aga right behind her.

cos all agas are useful for is letting cats sleep on em, and warming the kitchen up. oh and for having a carbon footprint the size of a small african nation.

I chuckled when I read some stat that mentioned a normal dual fuel oven has the same carbon footprint in a year that an Aga has in a week. Apparently they're also a complete bitch to actually cook on.
