Listening to radio 1 newsbeat on the way home, they had a debate going on about people feeling pressured into wearing poppies. The final text response they read out was something like; "All those brave men and women died so we have the freedoms to argue about feeling pressured into wearing poppies"

Nuff said me thinks............................................ ............

Not sure what I think of this, it was actually a bit shocking in a way, but it is interesting reading anyway...read through the comments/discussion below. It is a perspective on "one man's hero is another's...??"

Protest Against HMS Ocean - Indymedia Ireland

Found it whilst searching for info on white poppies that I heard being debated on the radio yesterday.

2nd class citizens

its fantastic to see the comments from YD'ers towards the armed forces both from the past and the present, it's a far cry from when i remember being brought up in the army. My dad was a professional soldier who served in the royal highland fusiliers and then the 1st battalion devon and dorsets from 1954 to 1976. During this time he did five tours of Ulster, during his tour of 1969 three soldiers from his battalion were murdered by the IRA, they were all under 18. It was their murders that caused the British army to only allow soldiers over 18 to server in ulster. My dad was also in Cyprus and Aden during the troubles as well as peace keeping duties in various parts of the world. We lived in Parkwood in kent towards the end of his time in the army and I remember being told on a number of occassions by civilians in the area that soldiers and their families where no better than second class citizens and that we ought to F**k off as we were bringing the prices of their houses down, these sort of comments were made on a regular basis. I suppose as at the time there was no major wars going on "just" N.I, the armed forces were probabley not appreciated.

Thumbs up Just remember

Wars are started by men too old to go and fight and fought by men to young to go and die.
Yes it'll be no different for me this year as every year i'll remember the men uniformed and non uniformed that played their part.
I'd still love to see the merchent men recognised for the part they played. Aint no poppies so englands rose ll have to do.

Just heard The Last Post being played at the rugby

Brings a lump to my throat everytime! The minutes silence wasn't possible for me this morning as we were on a call but i did switch the siren off momentarily.

Im just sorting out my uniform for parade tomorrow...like Nick said, I wish my GGrandad was still alive to tell me all his stories. We have the Black Watch coming to the unit on Tuesday to give us a lecture on the theory of Leadership. Should be a good lecture with some good war stories.

Very true i've done this parade three times and it is one of the most moving things you can do in the forces. Standing there as the poppy's fall.

I am all for remembering the armed forces, but i feel a little disapionted that the Merchant navy get so little recognation. The British Merchant Navy lost meny men and woman, and if the sea lanes had not been filled with men and woman willing to brave the terror of the battle of the Atlantic aboard lightly armed merchant ships, we would have never won the war, and the UK would have been starved to its knees.
