| Hmm camera packing ideas off to work/holiday/expedition all rolled in one, to top off with limited luggage capacity. I was planning to bring my SLR so i can get better shots than my compact digital which is more bulky especially if i bring it in my camera case with all the usual acessories. . decided to travel light and just bring a 28-85mm lens. possibly bring my flash with me as well if I can jam it in. which will go in my day pack, 20L backpack which will be filled with the usual malarky (food, platypus water bottle and emergency kit) I dont have anything suitable to protect my camera sufficiently against knocks etc. The camera will have to have the body down and the lens facing up on my back pack to fit. any ideas? the camera is fairly big and sturdy but the lens obviously cant take much damage. I had a look around for 2nd hand leather cases but they dont fit that well. |

| Just remember that the dimensions of hand luggage at present is nowhere near what has been allowed in the past. I don't think a 20l daysack would pass the criteria whihc, from memory is 45cm x 35cm x 16 cm - small laptop sized. Just give it a check because if you go to all the toruble fo packing it and can't carry it you will be upset!

| My bags are all going freight a couple of weeks before hand along with the research teams equipment, so not a problem for me. But take your point John, may be a bit heavy for hand luggage. Cheers Mark

| thank for the tips, i have got some similar pelicases but they are too big for what i want. looked up the hand luggae allowance, pretty sure my bag will get through. i think flight shouldnt be a problem, although I am very relieved now that we are allowed hand luggage since there was no way in hell i would check in my laptop and see it come back in 10 million pieces. also documents which if were lost in baggage would be a nightmare. i was more planning in terms of when i am out trekking/climbing as i am err rather unmindful of equipment, i just do what i have to do and expect my kit to hold up if it doesnt it isnt the right piece for me. i wont be bringing my usual case since its bulky and i dont want to have too many things on a short trip like this without a secure base camp. just curious mark what do you work on? |

| Not exactly a work trip, although work are sending/paying for it. Am going to help a research team study the migration of Grey Whales. I posted a few early details here Now That's What I Call A Team Building Exercise Soon as I get the full briefing documents through I'll post a bit more info. Cheers Mark

| When I travel, my camera, housing, lenses an strobes all go into to a backpack each wrapped in a t-shirt. Works well so far.
