Audio Books - YD Help Needed

Right guys - I need a favour from the YD massive.

Dads in hospital. I'm not going to go into details becuase I'll end up blubbing again (theres been a constant on/off tap thing going on since Thursday). It's putting Skye, the Farnes and even Africa in the balance until we have had chance to find out what is going on.

Anyway, he's laid up (and possibly for a long while) and bored out of his mind but can't hold a book so we thought we'd try and get him some audio books - either CD or tape (we have players for both). The bad thing is that the only one the library has are Mills and Boons or Daphne De Maurier. Neither of which are his cup of tea!!!!

So, do any of you work in the book industry or do you have relatives who have access to audio books through their own disablities.

Dad likes

The Hornblower series/old fashioned sea faring novels
Spy novels (james bond, tom clancy, jeffry deaver)
Cowboys

Thanks to everyone who has been putting up with the uncontrollable and at times hysterical phone calls.

Any heop greatfully received in keeping Dad sane until we can get him home.

Ones "in the know" feel free to tell them what has happened to Dad but I can't bring myself to type it, its breaking my heart.

Kath, I have a dozen or so books in MP3 format that I can drop into a DVD. PM me your address and I'll put them in to post to you.

Kath,
What about podcasts or torrents.
Get him a cheapo mp3 plater and then scour the 'net.
There is all sorts out there.
If he's like my da he'd not terribly computer literate, but if you get a player with removable memory and a couple of cards, you can be d/l'ing stuff to one while he's listening to the other then swap on visits or if you have a laptop, take that with you.

Kath - have you looked at Amazon - lots and lots thre, you woll get them in a couple of days too. Audio books are very commercial these days and all the big booksroes will have them too.

What about Radio shows as well? Does he like any of the old comedy stuff as all the BBC radio series come on CD/tape these day too.

All the best

Lou

Larger WHSmith stores usually have a selection of BBC audio shows and books. Try introducing him to The Navy Lark - my Dad loves that one.

From one 'in the know' I suspect Kath and her family will be a bit too stressed and busy running each other around to have time to shop or look on the internet.

Can I urge anyone who can lend or donate audio books for free to help Kath and Co. out with your generosity? Or perhaps those of you who are less of a techno-numpty than myself can help by downloading some stuff on Kath's behalf? Many thanks if you can help in any way - I am sure Kath and her family will appreciate it.

Kath: Keep going girl!

if required, i can rent them from my local lib and post them up. (audio casettes)

dunno if there are others in leeds who can also do so as it will be easier for them.

The radio shows thing is a good idea that I hadn't thought of. As a fmily when we were all at home we used to always listen to the 6pm Radio 4 comedy half hour that had "just a minute" in it. I can't remember the others that were on.

We've got dad a portable DVD Player whic plays MP3 cd's, normal cd's and copied dvd's (shhhhhh!!) so an Ipod too is a bit out of the question

Keep your fingers crossed people - I think we are in for the long haul on this one.

I would but I don't have any Sorry.

I will have a look at downloads tonight though, but I am not very good with that sort of thing either, as witnessed in the Torrent thread.
