Darren Campbell; Right or wrong?

So the only Gold Medal won by our lottery sponsered wealthy athletes at the recent European Championship was won by the 4 X 100m mens relay team.

Darren Campbell, one of the most succesfull British Athletes, was one of the quartet, so was Dwain Chambers, an athlete who has failed a dope test, served a ban and come back.

After the race, as the usual lap of honour was about to take place, Darren Campbell walked off the track (as a winner) and refused to take part in the Lap of Honour.

His reason was that (alledgedly) whilst he would run in a race for his country, he would not acknowledge the part played by a athlete who had taken drugs. He has since said that the reason was not Dwain's drug taking but his reluctance to name and shame his suppliers - thereby protecting the future generation of British Athletes.

So the question is;

Do you applaude his stance or is he misguided? The answers are:

Darren was right; no room for cheats
Darren was wrong; Dwain has served his time: End of.
Its doesn't matter a rats arse the cheats will always win.
The only way to level the playing field is to let everyone take what they want.

Darren Campbell also had his medals stripped from him same as othe r members of the relay team after Dwaine Chambers was tested positive, that is part of his protest.

Darren Campbell happily trains under one Linford 'I didn't do it' Christie. Smacks a bit of two-facery if you ask me. Which you did!

And IMHO good for him. I respect his stance, it must have taken guts and I must say it was one of the most intelligent objections I have ever seen. Do the business, win the medal and then object - priceless.

Absolutly, hasn't Paula Ratcliffe just objected to Linfords new role as a mentor?

Mentor is a strange term for a convicted drugs cheat she implied!

I think that, like footballers, they are over-paid prima donnas.
Unlike footballers, who get paid for by the supporters, these guys and girls are paid for by our lottery money.
What a waste when it could go to our new club RIB or some guinea pig farmer.

Removes tongue from cheek, but seriously folks, why should we invest in these guys when some people who have paid into the NI all their lives are having to pay for their own cancer therapy?

I wholeheartedly agree, a complete waste of money, what difference does it make if someone can run, hop, skip, whatever a few seconds faster than someone else, another money making scam.

Dont buy a lottery ticket!! Thats how easy it is to withdraw financial support but try doing that with your NI contributions! I enjoy watching athletes perform and I feel a sense of pride when England or GB win medals.

Turbie do you really think gate money and sales from footy related items is enough to pay the footy players wages and transfer prices? Those days are well and truly over.

That makes it worse in a way then, this woman has had no choice but to pay her NI, although she could have paid extra via PHI, then cannot get the drugs she needs.
I actually choos not to buy a lootery ticket, but the scheme is still supported by others.
And I know this does not apply to ALL lottery ticket purchacers, but I find it ironic that some of them don't have jobs, therefore do not pay NI, but still manage to afford tickets (oh and booe=ze and fags).

Well there is sponsorship and marketing too, I personally do not choose to spend my weekends looking like David Beckham in his work clothes, but plenty do, however at least they can choose to spend (£40+ quid a pop?) on footy shirts rather than having it deducted at source and then told they can't have a shirt because someone else it getting it.

I really do understand your sense of pride, however it is marred for me by the (albeit minority of) animals that call themselves football supporters, and the ridiculous sums of money involved. I don't follow footy, but on R4 yesterday it made the news that some coiffeured millionaire may not get tranferred because the buying club will not stump up the asking price of £20M, they can only afford £17M.

wasn't it claimed that atheltics is second only to cycling for the amount of its atheletes taking performance enhancing drugs.

won't be long before we get 2 olympics, one will be the ideal of untainted athletes the other probably sponsored by a pharmaceuticals company.
